Kahsay, Gallagher Win 2nd Rock ‘n’ Roll New York 10K
Music-filled road race to draw 6,000 runners to Brooklyn on Saturday, Oct. 13; Revamped course highlighted best of Prospect Park; Indie-Rock duo Neckbeard Telecaster headlined post-race concert

NEW YORK – The Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series returned to the streets of Brooklyn’s Prospect Park for the 2nd Rock ‘n’ Roll New York 10K on Saturday, Oct. 13 morning. A brisk but near perfect running day greeted more than 6,000 entrants, who were entertained by live bands and DJs performing at every mile along the tree-lined route.
Ethiopian Mikael Tesfaye Kahsay, 26, out dueled two-time Olympian Mulugeta Wondimu to win the race with a time of 30 minutes, 24 seconds. Wondimu, who represented Ethiopian at two 1500m Olumpic finals, finished six seconds back.
“The race was good, it was a very nice morning and I liked the course,” said Kahsay, who won a race for the third consecutive month after winning the Percy Sutton Harlem 5K in August and the Somers Great Escape 5 Mile in September.
On the women’s side, New York native and Fordham University graduate Kerri Gallagher won with a personal best time of 34:24, five seconds ahead of Ethiopian Aziza Aliyu. Gallagher, 23, who attended high school nearby at Bishop Kearney, set several Atlantic 10 conference records at Fordham and recently moved to Washington DC to train with the the New Balance Pacers Track Club.
The 2012 event featured a revamped route, which began on the south side of Prospect Park Lake near the Boathouse, and ran outside Grand Army Plaza, down Flatbush Avenue and back into the park before finishing at the Nethermead.
“New York has an incredible running scene and an abundance of talented musicians and DJs, making it an ideal location for the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series 10K,” said Adam Zocks, Event Director. “Not only did runners enjoy the scenic surroundings of Prospect Park, but the beer garden, bands along the course and the headlining performance by Neckbeard Telecaster combined to elevate the experience for participants in our second year.”
