Joe Navas, 36, of North Eastham and the Cape Cod Athletic Club bested the largest field in recent race history at the 30th Annual Seagull Six 5.74-mile Road Race held on Sunday, April 1, in Woods Hole. Navas finished in 31:02. Stacey Lane, 41, of Charlestown and the Heartbreak Hill Striders ran a 41:08 to finish as the top woman overall and first Woman Master.
This year, the Seagull Six was designated as Race #15 in the Hockomock Swamp Rat 2006-07 "Grand Pricks" series of road races. The Hocomock Swamp Rat, billed as "The Journal of New England Road Racing" by its founder and editor, Peter Wallan, is a quite irreverant and thoroughly entertaining record of the New England running scene. Its subscribers, who are hardcore runners and fiercely loyal, are called "Rats." Some years back Wallan dreamed up the race series just for them. Races in the 20-race series are picked because of their challenging courses and purist qualities. Wallan calls his series "20 Knee Shredding Races to Determine The Toughest Runner in New England!" The Seagull's uphill first mile and nothing flat thereafter finally earned it a spot in "Ratdom" as a "Grand Pricks" Race. The result was that more than 50 "rats' swarmed into Woods Hole for the Seagull's 30th running.
Nevas took charge of the race from the beginning, led the whole way, and finished more than a minute ahead of his fellow CCAC teammate, Geof Newton of Yarmouth Port who covered the course in 32:15. Steve Faluotico of West Falmouth and the Falmouth Track Club finished third in 32:56 and set a PR in the process. Fourth overall and First Master was John Noland, 44, of Kingston and the Boston Athletic Association who ran 33:21. Fifth Overall was Mike Tammaro, 38, of Narragansett, RI in 34:26.
In the women's race, one minute and seventeen seconds separated the top five finishers. Stacey Lane was closely pursued by Stace Beaulieu, 35, of West Falmouth who repeated her 2006 second place finish with a time of 41:42. Eighteen seconds later Dennis' Mary Peabody finished in 42:00 and took first place in the Women's Senior Division. She was followed by Heidi Ingram of Falmouth (42:13) and Nicole Poulton of Boothbay Harbor, ME (42:23).
It was a perfect day for running with sunny skies, mild temperatures and no wind to speak of. As a result, more than 80 runners post-entered. When FTC Cannoneer and Master of Metallurgy Bob Richards, fired the cannon, the rat-swollen field of 233 runners took off for its tour of the scenic and hilly loop course. In addition, as there has been for the last several years, a 2.5 mile non-competitive walk was held in conjunction with the event to raise money for breast cancer prevention programs in Falmouth.
There were 202 finishers in this year's Seagull Six. The race has been staged annually by the Falmouth Track Club since 1978 and was again sponsored by Lawrence Lynch Corporation, together with Falmouth Podiatry, Falmouth Physical Therapy, Sherwood Mortgage, and the Inkwell Bookstore. A portion of proceeds from the race will benefit the Falmouth High School track program.
