Inaugural Maine Summit to Sea Marathon Series Announced

Organizers of both the Sugarloaf Marathon and Mount Desert Island Marathon have announced the formation of the first race series in the state of Maine dedicated exclusively to marathon running.
The first ever "Maine Summit to Sea Marathon Series" will start in the spring at the 2009 Sugarloaf Marathon and conclude in the fall at the 2009 Mount Desert Island Marathon. Competitors will be scored on their combined times for both events. There will be awards in various age divisions as well as crowning the overall champions of this endurance series.
The Sugarloaf Marathon is the oldest continually run marathon in the state of Maine with its first edition held in 1983. The Mount Desert Island Marathon was first run in 2002 and has quickly earned many accolades including being named "Most Scenic in North America".
Jami Badershall and Gary Allen, the respective race directors of the events, feel that by combining their unique races into a single series including their dramatic geographic differences and even separate seasons, both events will become even more popular.
"Even though we have two very different races, runners come to our marathons for similar reasons - the scenery, the laidback atmosphere and the friendly people who run each event," Badershall said. "Our marathon is a great one to open the running season with, and the MDI is a great one for runners to close out the season with. Why wouldn't we do something like this?"
Allen added, "Marathon running in the state of Maine has a long history of excellence and we are honored to do our respective part to help write another chapter in this long running story."
