Fitchburg, MA -- During their annual meeting in Fitchburg, Massachusetts on Sunday, January 4, 2009, Jeff Gould, President of the venerable North Medford Club, presented Dave Camire with the 2008 Fred Brown Cup for outstanding contributions to the sport of running over many years. Camire, who resides in Nashua, New Hampshire has been active in the running community of the Merrimack Valley and beyond for decades.

This award was first presented in 1992, and is an annual highlight for the North Medford Club in honor of their founder. It was originally scheduled for presentation at the North Medford Club Annual Holiday Party, but that meeting was postponed due to the severe damage and power outages of the December ice storm.

Camire is co-founder of www.coolrunning.com, the world’s first Website dedicated to the sport of running, and has founded and directed dozens of races, most prominently the invitational Mill Cities Relay (25 years), the Good Times Series in Lowell, Massachusetts, and the Wild Rover Irish Pub Series among many, many others. Camire is a long time coach, and a member of many running clubs. He is the owner of Yankee Timing Company, a race timing and management company.

The North Medford Club is the second oldest running club in America; only the Boston Athletic Association is senior among running clubs. NMC was founded in 1933 by the legendary Fred Brown. They strive to maintain a tradition of low cost, no frill racing—the legacy of Fred Brown, who truly was the Johnny Appleseed of running.

Fred Brown is indeed a legend in New England Running. In his acceptance Camire related a few of his early encounters with Brown, who either founded or inspired more races than any other person. In fact, Camire has followed in his footsteps in many ways in regard to race founding and management, and overall contributions to the sport.

NMC is most famous today as the organizers of the Winnipesaukee Relay, the 8-leg 65.1-mile counterclockwise loop around New Hampshire’s largest lake. The Lake Winnipesaukee Relay was the brainchild of Fred Brown, who founded it in 1989 on the heels of his discontinued Plymouth to Provincetown Relay in Massachusetts. NMC also sponsors both a winter and summer series of races. The winter races are held on Sunday afternoons at various locations in southern New Hampshire and eastern Massachusetts. During the summer, races are held on Tuesday nights at similar locations. www.northmedfordclub.org
