NEW YORK – The Self-Transcendence 6 & 10 Day Race in Flushing Meadows Corona Park saw the largest participation to date with over 80 pioneer-runners from 19 countries. The runners live and run in a temporary “on site village” specially constructed with a full kitchen, medical, dorms and counter stations. The top runners run over 3 marathons a day on a 1-mile loop course through heavy winds and rain and with almost no sleep. Surmounting the impossible barriers of fatigue and exhaustion after running around-the-clock for 6 and 10 days, both Dipali Cunningham and Terezia Kaneenika Janakova have landed in the record books.
Kaneenika, 39, was first place for the women in the 10 Day with an amazing 707 miles for a new Slovakian National Record. Dipali, 50, won the 6 Day overall and set a new World Record for roadracing with an astonishing 513 miles defeating a tough competitor Pam Reed. Dipali has won all of the 12 Six Day Races she has entered, 24 of the 30 multiday events she has run since 1991 with 10 overall wins. Other national records that Teresa Kaneenika Janakova holds are: 700 miles in 10 days and 19 hours and 1,000 miles in 15 days and 19 hours. Both train by running over 350 miles per month and go through dozens of running shoes in the course of a year!
On hand to witness the finish was President of the MAC (Metropolitan Athletic Congress) Mr. R.A.Vernon, City Council Member Jim Gennaro and Consul General Mr. Hague of Bangladesh and Consul Boisse from Canada.
This is the Fourteenth Annual Self-Transcendence Ten Day and the Twelveth Annual Self-Transcendence Six Day Races which are organized by the Sri Chinmoy Marathon Team.
Ultra Marathon running dates back to the 1870’s and has been quickly gaining in popularity over the past several years. The runners of this sport have to battle both mental and physical challenges as they push on through all kinds of weather conditions – from torrential rains and hurricane winds to freezing cold temperatures and unbearable heat. The race goes on no matter what!
The next up coming multi-day race in Queens, New York will be history’s longest – 3,100 miles beginning June 14th and finishing almost 2 months later!
