Awol and Belovol Win United Technologies Greater Hartford Marathon

HARTFORD, Conn., Oct. 13, 2007 Mohammed Awol of Ethiopia won the 14th annual United Technologies Greater Hartford Marathon today with a time of 2:17:15 in the men's race. In the women's race, Tatiana Belovol of Ukraine came in first with a time of 2:42:19. Rounding out the top three in the men's event, Ethiopian Gurmessa Megerssa finished second with a time of 2:17:21. Wilson Chepkwony of Kenya came in third at 2:18:18.
In the women's marathon, Russian Valentina Levushkina placed second at 2:44:29. Shannon Hovey of West Granby, Connecticut, finished third with a time of 2:44:50. Runners enjoyed a new, flatter course and cool, crisp autumn weather.
Kenyan Stephen Chemlany won the men's half marathon, finishing at 1:06:51. Semunguse Solomon of Ethiopia placed second with a time of 1:07:17. Mark Miller of New Hampshire came in third at 1:07:38. Veena Reddy of Philadelphia won the women's half marathon with a time of 1:17:47. Nicole Kulikov-Hagobian of Massachusetts finished second in 1:19:13. Mary Proulx of New Hampshire placed third at 1:20:18.
In the 5K men's race, Brendan Callahan of South Glastonbury, Connecticut, came in first at 15:23. Benjamin Hildebrand of West Hartford, Connecticut, finished second with a time of 16:33. Jeffrey Spencer of West Hartford, Connecticut, came in third at 17:55. Shauneen Garrahan of Massachusetts won the women's 5K with a time of 17:34. Zofia Wieciorkowska of Stratford, Connecticut, came in second at 17:55. Melissa Donais of Massachusetts placed third with a time of 18:21.
