PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The 2009 Amica Marathon raised nearly $12,000 for the Ronald McDonald House of Providence. The announcement was made recently by Amica Insurance and Eident Sports Marketing.

The Ronald McDonald House of Providence, a nonprofit organization, provides programs that directly improve the health and well-being of hospitalized children and their families. Since its doors opened 20 years ago, the Ronald McDonald House of Providence has served as a temporary home to more than 5,000 families whose children received medical care for premature birth, serious injury, illness or surgery.

“We are extremely grateful for support from the Amica Marathon,” said Michael Fantom, Chief Executive Officer of the Ronald McDonald House of Providence. “Our programs allow families to spend additional time with a sick child, help ease financial burdens, provide a sense of normalcy and keep families together during times of medical crisis. The funds provided from the Amica Marathon will help us to continue to reach that goal.”

Thousands of runners battled harsh weather conditions while participating in the 2009 Amica Marathon on Oct. 18. The runners, who ranged in age from 10 to 80, came from as far away as Belgium to compete in the event.

Kevin O’Neil of North Kingstown, R.I., took first place (2:42.50). Elizabeth Foster of Ellington, Conn., was the top female finisher (3:03:53).

In the UnitedHealthcare Half Marathon, Eric Lonergan, also of North Kingstown, finished first (1:10.34). Trish Hillery of Smithfield was the first female to finish (1:26.36.06).
