The 2007 Amica Insurance Breakers Marathon will support grassroots marathon running in New England and beyond, by offering a prize money purse for the first time, as well as expense and travel money for qualified athletes. Top local marathoners, both male and female, are encouraged to apply for financial support for travel and lodging, as well as an entry fee waiver, at this year’s Amica Insurance Breakers Marathon, if they have met the following standards:

· male marathoners that have run 2:40 or better during the past two years
· female marathoners that have run 3:05 or better during the past two years

Each application will be evaluated for eligibility; please submit before September 1. For more information, please contact Don Allison at don-allison@comcast.net and include your running and marathon resume.

In addition to this program, the prize money structure will be as follows:

Open men and women

First Place $1,000
Second Place $500
Third Place $250

Age-group and in-state men and women

First 40 to 49 $200
First 50 to 59 $200
First 60 and over $200
First Rhode Islander $150

The Amica Insurance Breakers Marathon covers a rolling course on scenic Newport and Middletown roads. Starting at the Newport Yachting Center on America’s Cup Boulevard, the course runs through some of the most scenic spots on Aquidneck Island, including historic Thames Street in downtown Newport, around Fort Adams State Park, past Hammersmith Farms and the Newport Country Club, around scenic Brenton Point and Ocean Drive, past the famous Bellevue Mansions, by beautiful ocean views along Surfers Beach and Second Beach, through the Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge, along the Norman Bird Sanctuary, through the quiet back country roads of Indian Avenue, past majestic Saint Georges Academy, before finishing at Easton’s Beach.

This new route for 2007 begins at Newport's waterfront and offers even more of the scenic views "the Ocean State" is known for. The course is USATF certified and a qualifier for the Boston Marathon.

The 2007 Amica Insurance Breakers Marathon will also honor Bobby Doyle, the winner of the first Ocean State Marathon in 1976. Bobby will serve as the honorary starter and grand marshall for the 2007 race. Perhaps the most accomplished marathoner in Rhode Island’s history, Bobby went on to win the Ocean State Marathons six more times after that initial victory in 1976. In addition, he recorded three top ten finishes in the Boston Marathon.

The mission of the 2007 Amica Insurance Breakers Marathon race weekend is to bring a world-class marathon race back to the great state of Rhode Island, and in the process raise money for the Providence Ronald McDonald House.
