BRIDGETOWN, Barbados: Victor Ledger of St. Lucia overcame scorching sun and a field of hundreds to win the annual "Run Barbados" marathon Sunday.
Ledger completed the 42.2 kilometers (26.2 miles) in 2 hours, 29 minutes, 49 seconds, ahead of Pamenos Ballantyne of St. Vincent (2:33.32). Charles Nyakundi of Kenya (2:43.10) was third.
The St. Lucian also won in 2004, but placed third last year.
"I felt comfortable and did what I had to do and I won," Ledger said.
Canada's Josianne Aboungono won the women's race (3:05.36), while Sarah Williams of England (3:19.33) was second.
Run Barbados, which began in 1983, is a qualifier for the Boston Marathon.
