RIO DE JANEIRO - Jacob Frey and Chris Lundstrom put forth a strong effort in finishing fourth and sixth, respectively, in the men's marathon Sunday morning at the 2007 Pan American Games at Flamengo Park in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Frey (Oakton, Va.) and Lundstrom (Northfield, Minn.) went out with the leaders through the first 5km and then backed off the pace and were sitting in twelfth and thirteenth through the half-way point, with Frey going through in 1:08:50 and Lundstrom in 1:09:09. Both steadily moved up the pack after that.

With 5km left to go, it started to pour. The weather spurred Frey on and he increased his pace, crossing the line in fourth in 2 hours 16 minutes 44 seconds, a new personal best by 53 seconds. Said Frey when he finished, "There was a downpour for a little while and it was nice. I love the rain." Lundstrom finished in sixth in 2:18:05 and echoed Frey sentiments, saying "This weather was perfect for a marathon."

Both athletes felt that with a little bit more time, they could have pulled something out. Frey "felt great. I think if I would have had a couple more miles, I think I could have done something." Lundstrom reiterated his feelings, saying "a few more k's and maybe we could have gotten some medals."
