From Ryan Lamppa, Running USAThe 2011 XTERRA Trail Run World Championship on Sunday, December 4 will be run in memory of women's world champion Sally Meyerhoff.
More than 1,500 runners from around the world will participate in the event at Kualoa Ranch, Hawaii, and each runner will wear a special race bib with the name "Sally" in the background.
Meyerhoff won the women's division of the 2010 XTERRA Trail Run World Championship at Kualoa Ranch, setting a women's course record of 1 hour, 28 minutes, 58 seconds, over the 21K course.
Just three months after winning that race, Meyerhoff's life ended tragically on March 8, 2011. She was killed in a cycling accident in her hometown of Maricopa, Ariz. while training for the Ironman World Championship.
In addition to the special race bibs, Meyerhoff will be remembered during a moment of silence prior to this year's race at Kualoa Ranch.
