NEW YORK CITY (Jan. 11) – Tirunesh Dibaba, the double World Champion who also holds the 5000-meter indoor World Record, will make a rare New York appearance in the NYRR Women’s 3000-Meter Run at the 100th Millrose Games on Feb. 2, organizers announced today.
On a night teeming with a century’s worth of history, Dibaba and the rest of the 3000-meter field will be making some of their own: there has never been a women’s race in the Millrose Games longer than a mile.
Dibaba, the reigning World Champion at 5000 and 10,000 meters, is the first athlete, male or female, ever to hold both titles. The 21-year-old Ethiopian superstar is also a three-time World Cross Country Champion and the 2004 Olympic bronze medalist at 5000 meters.
Among others expected in the historic race are Americans Jen Rhines, a 2004 Olympian and 2005 USA Outdoor Champion at 10,000 meters, and Sara Hall, a member of the USA team at the 2006 World Indoor Championships at 3000 meters who won the 2006 Continental Airlines Fifth Avenue Mile in New York City.
They will join legends such as Eamonn Coghlan and Mary Slaney in what promises to be one of the most star-studded nights in Madison Square Garden history. Fittingly, the Millrose Game is the longest-continuous sporting event held at the famed Garden.
The 100th Millrose Games, the second stop in USA Track & Field’s Visa Championship Series, will be held Feb. 2 at Madison Square Garden beginning at 6 p.m. For tickets or more information, visit www.Millrose-Games.com. Tickets are also available at Ticketmaster (call 212-307-7171, visit www.Ticketmaster.com or at Ticketmaster outlets); or at the Madison Square Garden box office.
