Broe earned his position in the 5000 meter event at the Norwich Union British Grand Prix Track Meet in London this evening. Broe's time of 13:18.61 is a personal record and surpasses the Olympic "A" Standard for 5000 Meters of 13:21.50. Broe, the 2004 U.S. Olympic Trials Champion, finished seventh in the race won by legendary Ethiopian distance runner Haile Gebreselassie. Gebreselassie's winning time was 12:55.51.
Jonathon Riley, the U.S. Olympic Trials runner-up, will join Broe as the U.S. Olympic Team members in the 5000 meter event. The 5000 meters qualifying heats will be run on Wednesday, August 25 with the Finals to be run on Saturday, August 28.
A graduate of East Peoria Community High School and the University of Alabama, Tim Broe was the 2002 Steamboat Classic Champion, the 2000 NCAA Steeplechase Champion and a four-time Illinois High School Association (IHSA) Champion.
"After winning the Olympic Trials a couple of weeks ago, we have been anxiously waiting for Tim to get his qualifying standard," said Steamboat Classic Race Director Philip Lockwood. "Ever since he began competing at East Peoria High School, all of us in the Central Illinois running community knew he had special talents. We're proud to say he's a loyal member of the Illinois Valley Striders!"
"We also need to make special notice of Ed McGraw, the co-founder of the Striders and Tim's high school coach. This rewards his lifetime of dedication to the sport of distance running," Lockwood added.
