Bryan Dayton, 33, of Boulder, Colo., and Kami Semick 40, of Bend, Ore., captured the respective men's and women's titles at the USA 50 km Trail Championships on Saturday, August 26, at the Golden Gate National Recreation area and Mt. Tamalpais California State Park. Semick's win also earned her the masters title.
Semick recovered from a fall early in the race before going on to win her first USA title in a course record 4:25:15. Semick's four and a half minute win broke a seven-year winning streak for her North Face Racing Team teammate and 2006 USA 50 Mile Trail champion, Nikki Kimball.
Patience paid off for Dayton, twice the runner-up at this event, as he passed the leader, Ben Nephew, 31, of Mansfield, Mass., as they completed the final climb from the Tennessee Valley, the last of seven ascents of 1,000 feet.
Dayton's downhill speed and a sprint to the finish, following the last descent, earned him his first USA title and a 3:59:53 finish for a 39-second win over Nephew.
The men's masters winner was Cliff Lentz, 41, of Brisbane, Calif., in third place overall with a time of 4:13:34.
In the senior masters (over 50) Californians, Joe Schieffer, 55, recorded a 5:10:39 while Jeri Howland ran a 5:20:38.
