LAUREL SPRINGS, N.C. – David Roche and Megan Kimmel claimed their first USA titles as they won the USA 10 km Trail Championships hosted by the fourth annual Continental Divide Trail Race on Saturday, August 25th.
The challenging course crosses over the Eastern Continental Divide twice and features numerous climbs, descents and sections of rugged single-track trail.
Roche (Durham, N.C.) and Bobby Mack (Raleigh, N.C.) led from the gun as the pair ran away from the rest of the field. While Mack led on the first climb of the race, Roche responded with a surge and opened a gap before the pair moved into the technical section of the course. Roche never looked back and continued on to claim his first national title in a time of 41:21. Mack followed in 42:42 and Duncan Hoge (Chapel Hill, N.C.) rounded out the top three in 44:08.
Kimmel (Silverton, Colo.) took an early lead in the women's race and never looked back as she ran to the win in a course record time of 48:21, improving the previous record by 7 seconds. Amber Moran (Skyland, N.C.) finished second in 49:35 and Maria Dalzot (Morgantown, W.V.) finished in 52:58 for third place.
In the women's masters field, the top two women repeated from last year; Alicia Parr (Durham, N.C.) took the title with a time of 1:03:56 and Kelly Baity (Winston Salem, N.C.) was second in 1:05:26. Laura Rain Tree (Pisgah Forest, N.C.) was third in 1:07:09. 75-year-old Joyce Hodges-Hite (Millen, Ga.) earned her fourth 70+ USATF age group championship.
The men's masters competition was close, with the top 3 men finishing less than a minute apart. Jason Bryant (Elkin, N.C.) captured his first masters title after turning 40 earlier this month with a time of 44:51. Chad Newton (Pisgah Forest, N.C.) finished second in a time of 45:30. Todd Callaghan (Beverly, Mass.) followed close behind in a time of 45:43.
In the team competition, the Bull City Track Club repeated their men’s team title with a total combined time of 3:51:49. The Carolina Godiva Track Club took second in a time of 4:32:01, and the Gate City Striders were third with a time of 5:02:12. For masters 40+ teams, the Carolina Godiva Track Club won the title again this year, while the Gate City Striders took second and the Igloi Track Club was third in 5:04:52. An Igloi Track Club masters 50+ team also competed, finishing in 5:30:14. On the women’s side, Bull City Track Club fielded the only complete team to earn the team title in 5:22:53.
