Since 1971, the Road Runners Club of America has been honoring dedicated individuals for their service to the running community. The RRCA is pleased to announce that we are now accepting nominations for the 2006 RRCA National Awards.

The nomination form and detailed information on the award categories including general criteria can be found at www.rrca.org/program/awardnom.pdf.

Nominations will be collected for all categories, and the nominations should be submitted to the National Office by 5 p.m. EST on November 1, 2006 (the deadline for website nominations is December 1st). The period of performance for the individual being nominated should be September 1, 2005 through August 31, 2006. All nominations will be forwarded to the appropriate selection committees who will choose the final national award recipients. All nominations should include a completed nomination form along with accompanying material outlined below. If you have questions, please contact Jessica Sleight at membership@rrca.org.

BROWNING ROSS SPIRIT OF THE RRCA AWARD
The Browning Ross Spirit of the RRCA Award was created to honor the memory of the RRCA,s founder, Browning Ross, who died in April 1998. The award honors a club member who is an unsung hero. These are the people who champion the RRCA tirelessly and enthusiastically, but prefer to stay in the background, letting others bask in the spotlight, just as Browning did. Please send a nomination form and a one page nomination essay about the nominee.

RRCA HALL OF FAME
Developed in 1970, the RRCA Long Distance Running Hall of Fame, inducts individuals that have dedicated themselves, not only in athletic performance but also in service, to the sport of long distance running. Please send a nomination form and one page nomination essay about the nominee.

RRCA SCOTT HAMILTON OUTSTANDING CLUB PRESIDENT
This award honors an outstanding RRCA Club President and is selected by the current RRCA National President. On July 30, 2005, Scott D. Hamilton passed away at the age of 77. Scott joined the Mid-Pacific Road Runners Club in 1965 and was an active runner for over 35 years. He served as the National President for the RRCA from 1966-67. Please send the application form and one page nomination essay about the nominee.

RRCA ROAD RUNNER OF THE YEAR
Developed in the 1975, the Road Runner of the Year Award was given to the runners with an outstanding record of racing performances during the year for both Male and Female runners. In 1984 RRCA added the categories, Male Masters and Female Masters. These awards are an opportunity to recognize the local male and female open and masters runners in your club who excel at all of their races. Please send a nomination form, race results for 2006, and 250 words describing why the nominee should be the 2006 Road Runner of the Year.

RRCA JERRY LITTLE EXCELLENCE IN JOURNALISM
(Three categories: Club Newsletter (small/medium & large club), Electronic Newsletter, and Club Writer)

In 2006, the RRCA has combined the small and medium newsletter category thus creating two awards: small/medium (499 or fewer club members) and large club newsletters (500 or more members). The Regional Directors along with a selection committee will pick the regional small/medium & large club newsletter, the club writer, and the e-newsletter which will then be forwarded to the Journalism Selection Committee for final selection of the national winner. A club may enter either the newsletter or e-newsletter category but not both.

Club Newsletter Award:
This award recognizes the outstanding club newsletters of the year in print format. The award is given to the club newsletter which demonstrates a variety of content, good physical presentation, informative and creative, and inclusive of the RRCA logo. Please send nomination form and three copies of two different issues of your newsletter.

Club Writer Award:
This award recognizes top club writers. This is an opportunity to showcase your club writer,s articles. The articles should be about running and should be memorable, creative and evocative. The writer should not be a paid running journalist. The writer can write for a print newsletter, on-line content, or e-newsletter. Please send nominations with a nomination form and one copy of two different stories/articles by the nominee.

NEW Club/Event E-Newsletter:
New for 2006, this award recognizes use of technology in communicating with members. It is open to any size club or event. The e-newsletter can be emailed to members or clearly posted on a website and should be in PDF or HTML format. The e-newsletter should look like a newsletter and not simply be a page on a club website. When printed, it should look like a newsletter suitable for mailing. For an example, review the RRCA e-magazine, FOOTNOTES.

JOURNALISTIC EXCELLENCE
This award, created in 1974, is given to a professional writer who has made a notable contribution to the literature of distance running for the year. Please send a nomination form, a one page essay on the writer, and a sample article of the nominee.

ROD STEELE OUTSTANDING VOLUNTEER
Rod Steele was a DC Road Runner Club President in 1974 until a plane crash took his life. This award is in memory of his contribution to the sport of running and as a volunteer and supporter of the RRCA. This award is given to recognize the outstanding volunteer (excluding the president) of a local club. Please send the application form and one page nomination including as much information as possible about the contributions of the nominee.

RRCA OUTSTANDING STATE REPRESENTATIVE
State Representatives provide assistance, guidance and information to clubs in their state. They are the local representation of the RRCA. This award was developed in 1984 to recognize the outstanding and superior service of our State Representatives. It is an opportunity to honor your state representative who fulfills their role with ambitious enthusiasm helping to promote running and the RRCA while assisting the local clubs with knowledge, communication and guidance. Please send a nomination form and one page nomination.

RRCA KURT STEINER CHILDREN'S DEVELOPMENTAL AWARD
Kurt Steiner was born in Austria in 1921 and came to the US in 1945. He, along with Joe Kleinerman, of the NYCRRC pioneered age group scoring and awards. His passion for running was surpassed by his passion for children. Steiner helped to organize many running events for children and established the first RRCA Cross Country Championship in NYC which hosted between 3,000 and 4,000 kids.

The Kurt Steiner Children's Developmental Award is to recognize a local club or event member who is dedicated to either promoting children's running and/or coordinating an outstanding children,s running program or event. Please send a nomination form and one page nomination of an individual who is dedicated to children,s running programs.

RRCA NINA KUSCSIK WOMEN'S DEVELOPMENT RUNNING AWARD
In 1972 the Women's Mini Marathon 10K was founded by Fred Lebow along with Nina Kuscsik and Kathrine Switzer. It was the first "women only" road race in the world. In 2006, the NYRR requested the award be named in honor of the first recipient in 1994, Nina Kuscsik.

The RRCA Nina Kuscsik Women' Development Running Award is to honor someone who has promoted women,s running through a significant community based program or at a national level. Please send a nomination form and one page nomination essay of someone who has significantly impacted women's running in your local community or nationally.

NEW

RRCA ROAD RACE OF THE YEAR
In 2006, the RRCA launched the Road Race of the Year to acknowledge RRCA nonprofit member races that provide safe, well designed and enjoyable races which promote grassroots running and the mission of the RRCA. Send a nomination form along with an outline describing how the race achieves the general criteria. Also include a copy of related race materials such as a registration form. General Criteria: must be an RRCA member, any size road race, must be organized as a nonprofit event or nonprofit club race, must be all volunteer run (no contract race director, but can contract for chip and finish line services), race attests to follow best practices as outlined in the RRCA Handbook, no insurance claims for the year, volunteer involvement, RRCA logo included on race materials & website. Additional Criteria: age group recognition beyond 50+, RRCA Championship or WDF events, uses RRCA preferred on-line provider, utilizes RRCA sponsors.

WEBSITE AWARD
This award is to honor and recognize those who have brought technology into their clubs as a means of communication and done so in an organized, efficient and technological manner. The website will be judged by the first impression, layout and graphic design, ease of navigation, use of technology, depth of content, up-to-date information, uniqueness, personality and contribution to the RRCA. Awards will be given to small (250 and fewer) and large (over 250) club websites. A top Website will be chosen from the finalists.
