INDIANAPOLIS - Carmelita Jeter has been named USA Track & Field’s Athlete of the Week after winning the Visa Women’s 100m at the Nike Prefontaine Classic in a world leading 10.70 last Saturday.

Jeter got out of the blocks quickly and extended her lead over the last 20 meters to finish 16-hundredths of a second ahead of her nearest competitor, Marshevet Myers. Jeter benefited from a just-barely legal wind reading of +2.0 on her way to clocking her third fastest 100m ever and setting the meet record. Her mark of 10.70 ties for the seventh fastest performance on the all-time U.S. list.

“When I saw my time of 10.70, I was really excited and pleased,” Jeter said. “My training is going really well, and I still have room for improvement...My main concern is making the [world] team.”

Jeter will return to Eugene in a little more than two weeks in an attempt to win her second USA Outdoor Championship title and to clench a spot on Team USA for the IAAF World Championships later this summer in Daegu, South Korea.

“I love running in Oregon, the track is great, but it is more so the atmosphere,” Jeter said. “When you are there with fans that enjoy the sport, it makes you take the competition up a notch because people actually appreciate what you are doing.”

Now in its tenth year, USATF's Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on the USATF website. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.
