Henning named Athlete of the Week

INDIANAPOLIS - Walter Henning has been named USA Track & Field's Athlete of the Week after smashing his own American Junior Record en route to winning the men's hammer throw Saturday at the 2008 IAAF World Junior Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland.
A three-time USA Junior champion and the 2007 Pan Am Junior gold medalist, Henning dominated the men's hammer throw, winning the title with his first heave of 76.14 meters/249-9, which broke his American Junior record by over two meters. He then furthered his record on his last throw with an effort of 76.92m/252-4. It was the first medal of any color for an American in the men's hammer throw in the 22-year history of the World Junior Championships. Henning's previous record of 73.87m/242-4 was set at the 2008 USA Junior Championships.
Now in its seventh year, USATF's Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on the USATF website. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.
