Tyson Gay overcame a poor start to win the men’s 100 meters while Chaunte Lowe picked up her third Diamond League victory of the year in the women’s high jump as the Samsung Diamond League season continued in Paris Friday.

Within the first few steps of the race Gay was near the back of the pack, but recovered to win in 9.99 seconds while American Justin Gatlin placed second in 10.03. Lowe cleared a height of 1.97m/6-5.5 to pick up the win, which adds to her victories in Oslo and Shanghai in the Diamond League earlier in the season and currently ranks her first in the league standings.

Gay’s win comes as he continues his return from hip surgery in 2011. The American record holder, Gay placed second in 9.86 June 24 at the Olympic Team Trials to qualify for the Olympic Games. Gatlin won the Olympic Trials in a personal best time of 9.80.

The win for Lowe comes shortly after she won the Olympic Trials June 30 in an Olympic Trials record height of 2.01m/6-7.

Americans also grabbed second place finishes from three athletes, which included Joe Kovacs in the shot put (20.44m/67-0.75); Virginia Crawford in a season best time in the 100m hurdles (12.59) and Bianca Knight in a season best time in the 200m (22.70).

American indoor record holder Francena McCorory grabbed a third place finish in the 400m in a time of 50.27 while Charonda Williams placed third as well in the 200m in a season best time of 22.70.

Americans placing fourth Friday included: Kristi Castlin in the 100m hurdles (12.76); Janay DeLoach in the long jump (6.50m/21-4) and Bershawn Jackson in the 400m hurdles (48.67).

The next stop on the Diamond League will take place June 13 in London.
