INDIANAPOLIS - Shalane Flanagan has been named USA Track & Field's Athlete of the Week after setting an American record in the women's 3,000 meters Saturday at the 2007 Reebok Boston Indoor Games.
A 2004 Olympian and the 2005 USA Outdoor 5,000m champion, Flanagan ran 8:33.25 in the RBK women's 3,000 to bury Regina Jacobs' previous 3,000 AR of 8:39.14. It was an epic run by the Marblehead, Mass., native, who ran off the shoulder of Meseret Defar as Defar went for the world record. Flanagan improved her own personal best by more than 20 seconds.
Another notable performance over the weekend came from Brittany Riley, a junior at Southern Illinois. Riley set a world best and American record in the women's weight throw when she recorded a throw of 24.57 meters/ 80-feet, 7.5-inches Saturday at the Gladstein Invitational in Bloomington, Ind. Her performance bettered Erin Gilreath's nearly two-year-old record of 24.23m/79-6.
Now in its sixth year, USATF's Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on the USATF website. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.
2007 USATF Athlete of the Week Winners: January 2, Thomas Morgan; January 9, Jacquelyn Coward; January 16, Ryan Hall; January 23, Johnny Dutch; January 30, Shalane Flanagan.
