INDIANAPOLIS- Chris Carter has been named USA Track & Field's Athlete of the Week after winning two gold medals at the 2006 IAAF World Junior Track & Field Championships in Beijing, China.

An All-American as a freshman at Brigham Young University, Carter won the men's 400m hurdles Friday in Beijing in 50.08 seconds after taking the lead for good at the second hurdle. Carter's performance makes him the first freshman hurdler from BYU ever to win a gold medal at a World Junior Championships.

The final event of the six-day meet was the men's 4x400m relay final where Carter ran the anchor leg as Team USA won the gold medal in the world junior leading time this season of 3 minutes, 3.76 seconds. Carter was joined on the U.S. squad by Quentin Summers, Justin Oliver and Bryshon Nellum.

As a true freshman in 2006, Carter won the Mountain West Conference outdoor 400-meter hurdle championship and later earned All-America honors in the event with a third-place finish at the NCAA National Outdoor Championships in Sacramento, where he turned in his personal-best time of 49.19 seconds.

Now in its sixth year, USATF's Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on the USATF website. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.
