Barron’s record highlights day 1 of 2006 USATF Junior Olympics

BALTIMORE - The 40th USATF National Junior Olympic Track & Field Championships began Tuesday in Hughes Stadium at Morgan State University in Baltimore, Md.
The Championships are a national competition with entry based upon qualifying standards for each event. The Junior Olympics feature the following age division: Bantam (10 and under), Midget (11-12), Youth (13-14), Intermediate (15-16) and Young Men/Women (17-18). Entry for this championship is based on athlete performances at preliminary, Association, and Regional levels of the 2006 USATF Junior Olympic Program.
Defending champion Trevor Barron of Bethel Park, Pa. dominated the field in the Youth Boys 3,000m race walk, setting a Junior Olympic record with his 14 minute 02.58 second victory. The previous record of 14:10.18 was set in 1997 by Tristan Rouss. Andrew Adams of Spartanburg, S.C., who took third at last year's Junior Olympics, was a distant second finishing in 15:00.39.
2005 Junior Olympic Midget Girls 1,500m race walk champion Jessica Reybal took command of the Youth Girls 3,000m race walk early on and never relinquished her lead, winning in 17 minutes 29.65 seconds. "My race was hard but at the same time easy, said Reybal. "It was so humid but easy because I'm not scared of the track. I really liked my race." South Texas Walk teammate Nicole Gomez took second in 17:55.92 with Taryn Wrotny finishing third in 18:05.65.
2005 Junior Olympic runner-up Alyssa Allison of Festus, Mo. claimed victory in the Intermediate Girls 2,000m steeplechase, crossing the line in 7 minutes 13.70 seconds. Sarah Higgens of Center Grove, Ind. was second in 7:41.39. On the boys side, Donny Roys of Medina, Ohio, who finished sixth last year, ran away with the title in the Intermediate Boys 2,000m steeplechase, winning in 6 minutes 15.12 seconds. Patrick Morgan was second in 6:26.41.
Josephine Vargas of Pharr, Texas won the Bantam Girls 1,500m race walk in 8 minutes 57.0 seconds while Nathaniel Roberts of Salem, Ore. won the Bantam Boys 1,500m race walk in 8:13.31.
2005 Junior Olympic champion Shanay Briscoe successfully defended her title in the Youth Girls pentathlon, winning the five event competition with 3,387 points. For the boys, Malik Cross of the New Wave Track Club took home the title in the Youth Boys pentathlon with 3,262 points.
2006 USA Youth champion Victoria Dunlap of Brentwood, Tenn. is leading the way in the Young Women's heptathlon at the end of day 1 with a score of 3,001 points whereas Kiani Profit of Pasadena, Calif. is leading the Intermediate Girls heptathlon competition with 2,775 points.
Curtis Beech, the 2006 USA Youth champion, is in the lead of the Intermediate Boy's decathlon at the end of day 1 with 3,540 points while 2005 Junior Olympic Intermediate Boys champion Terry Prentice leads the Young Men's decathlon with 3,716 points.
