Americans dominate in Greece

An impressive array of U.S. stars won nearly every event Friday at the 22nd Vardinoyiannia meet at Rethymno, Greece.
After running the fifth-fastest 200m time in history with his blistering time of 19.70 seconds last week in Lausanne, Switzerland, Tyson Gay continued his torrid 2006 outdoor season by winning Race 1 in the men's 100 meters with a career best time of 9.88 seconds (+2.00 mps). His performance equals the fifth-fastest time in the world this year run by co-world record holder Justin Gatlin at the Nike Prefontaine Classic on May 28.
Other U.S. winners included national 110m hurdles record holder Dominique Arnold, who won his specialty in 13.01 seconds (+2.20). Arnold set the American record last week in Lausanne with his time of 12.90 seconds.
In women's hurdles action, reigning World Outdoor champion and current world leader (12.43, July 11) Michelle Perry captured the 100m hurdles in 12.49 seconds, with fellow Americans Damu Cherry (12.60) and Jenny Adams (12.66, seasonal best) placing second and third respectively.
2005 World Outdoor Championships 200m silver medalist Rachelle Boone-Smith won Race 1 in that event on Friday in 22.50 seconds (+2.40), with 2004 Olympic 4x400m relay gold medalist Monique Henderson winning Race 2 with a seasonal best time of 22.82 seconds. In women's 100m action, Torri Edwards won the race in 10.86 seconds (+2.20 mps), with Rachelle Boone-Smith the runner-up in 11.04.
Americans were victorious in the two men's 200m races, with Kelly Willie winning the first heat in 20.20 seconds and Darvis Patton taking the second race in 20.66.
U.S. men's 1,500m record holder Bernard Lagat defeated a strong field in the 3,000 meters with a seasonal best time of 7 minutes 34.41 seconds, and in the men's 400m hurdles Michael Tinsley won Race 1 in 49.10 seconds and Derrick Williams won the second race of the day in 49.30.
In field event action, reigning USA Outdoor champion Jenn Stuczynski won the women's pole vault with an outdoor personal best clearance of 4.65 meters/15 feet 3 inches. Elsewhere, reigning World Indoor and Outdoor champion Walter Davis was the runner-up in the men's triple jump with a best effort of 16.80 meters/55 feet 1.50 inches, and 2004 Olympian and 2005 World Outdoor Championships finalist Jarred Rome was the runner-up in the men's discus with a best throw of 66.51 meters/218 feet, 2 inches.
