INDIANAPOLIS - Abdi Abdirahman has been named USA Track & Field's Athlete of the Week after placing fourth in the men's race Sunday at the 2006 LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon in Chicago, Ill.
A two-time Olympian and the first American finisher in the race, Abdirahman lowered his personal best by over two minutes, running 2 hours 08 minutes 56 seconds to place fourth overall. His previous personal best was 2:11:24 when he finished fifth in the 2005 New York City Marathon. Abdirahman's fourth-place finish was the highest by an American in the Chicago Marathon since 2002. In addition to winning $25,000 for his fourth-place finish, Abdirahman collected an additional $4,500 from the marathon's American Development Bonus fund.
Now in its sixth year, USATF's Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on the USATF website. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.
