HOUSTON - (April 2, 2012) - The Houston Marathon Committee has increased its participant cap to 25,000 for the 2013 Chevron Houston Marathon and Aramco Houston Half Marathon scheduled for Sunday, January 13. The Committee will again offer early race registration beginning Tuesday, May 8 through Thursday, May 31, 2012 (11:59pm CT) for eligible runners to receive a guaranteed race entry.

The raised cap represents a 1,000-participant increase over the 2012 cap and will be applied to the half-marathon field with 12,000 entries reserved for the half-marathon and 13,000 for the marathon.

"Following race weekend each year, we collectively evaluate all aspects of our event operations and review the feedback from literally thousands of runners," said Wade Morehead, executive director of Houston Marathon Committee. "Past and future operational improvements have allowed us to increase the cap modestly each year, and we most certainly want to create more opportunities but never at the expense of the participant experience."

New to 2013, the Houston Marathon Committee has implemented a "third time's a charm" rule, allowing runners who entered and were not selected in the lottery for two consecutive years the opportunity to register for a guaranteed entry into the 2013 marathon or half-marathon races during early registration. Eligible runners will be notified via email with details about how to register for the 2013 races.

Runners who meet a 4:00:00 (marathon), 1:52:55 (half-marathon) and 51:08 (10K) time qualification standard are eligible to receive a guaranteed race entries available during early registration. Finisher times dating back to January 1, 2011 may be used to qualify for early registration. Eligible qualifying races must be a USA Track & Field (USATF) or AIMS certified course and provide online race results.

Time qualification entries will be limited to the first 3,000 marathon and 2,500 half-marathoners who meet these standards and are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. If the time qualification fields are not fulfilled during early registration, the remaining race entries will be added to the open lottery pool.

In addition to "third time's a charm" registrants and time qualifiers, runners who have completed five or more Houston Marathons; deferred 2012 race registrants; and members designated by the Houston Area Road Runner Association (HARRA) are eligible to sign up during early registration and receive a guaranteed race entry.

Race registration for the general public will open on Wednesday, June 6, 2012 and extend through Thursday, June 21, 2012 at 11:59pm CT. Runners must register online at during the 16-day period. All registrants will be notified of their selection status no later than June 25, 2012.

Registration fees will remain the same for the marathon and half-marathon races at $125 and $105, respectively.
