The countdown to the 10th Annual Palm Beaches Marathon and Run Fest has begun! The Run Fest offers four races plus the relay, including the beautiful Palm Beach Marathon. The expo runs Friday and Saturday, and the 5K and 10K run Friday evening, December 6. The Marathon, Half Marathon and Marathon Relay run on Sunday morning beginning at 6:30 so Sunday plans and travel itineraries are much easier.
Since this is the 10th anniversary running they have designed a very cool, custom, commemorative medal—very cool indeed and one-of-a-kind. Add some bling from the Florida Storm Series (see below), and you will have some conversation pieces like no other finisher’s awards.
This exciting event will run in famous West Palm Beach, running courses that will feature many parks and intriguing sights along the waterways and roadways of this delightful region; and will highlight many notable locations where railroad magnate Henry Flagler established one of the earliest resorts in Florida. West Palm Beach is much more than a beach resort, having grown into a center for business and commerce with a lot to see and do, including cultural activities, shopping, dining, and ecotourism.
Publix Health and Fitness Expo, Awards and Schedule
The weekend kicks off with the Publix Health and Fitness Expo on Friday, December 6 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., located at the Harriet Hammel Theatre at City Place, 600 Rosemary Avenue, West Palm Beach, Florida 33401. Packet/bib pick up will be available during all expo open hours, of course.
The Waterfront 5K and 10K races take place Friday evening and will run at Waterfront Commons Park beginning at 6:00 p.m. This is a beautiful triangular park along the waterfront where famous Flagler Drive meets Clematis Street. There is a great lawn there for such special events are held. City Commons is a lovely public space where fountains and a Parisian-style plaza impress all visitors.
The Publix Health and Fitness Expo will also be open on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. It is open to the public and worth a visit. Marathoners, half marathoners and relay teams can also pick up packets and bibs during this time.
Those events run on Sunday morning, December 8 starting at 6:30 a.m. Awards for all races run three deep in 14 different age group categories for women and men.
The Palm Beaches
West Palm Beach is only 50 miles north of Miami, but has a totally different charm and appeal going back to the late 1800’s. And the historic city streets and lovely neighborhoods of West Palm Beach provide a terrific place to run in December. On race weekend the average high temperature is 77, and average low 62; compare that with Boston, for example, which averages 41 and 27 degrees respectively. Sunrise on Sunday morning will be at 6:56 so runners may see a terrific sunrise as they begin their races (start is 6:30). And there is much more sun in Florida—the sunshine state; sunset will be at 5:28 p.m. Boats will ply the waters along the course, and many activities beckon for the entire weekend, including over 47 miles of pristine beaches in Palm Beach County.
The Five-Event Florida Storm Series
This race is also very significant as part of a series--the "Run the Seas Florida Storm Series established by US Road Sports. That series includes the National Allstate Life InsuranceSM 13.1 Marathon® November 10; This event, the Palm Beaches Marathon and Run Fest (full and half marathon) December 8, 2013; the ING Miami Marathon (also full and half marathons) on February 2, 2014; the National Allstate Life InsuranceSM Miami 13.1 Marathon® on March 2nd; and the First Watch Sarasota Half Marathon and Half Marathon Relay on March 16, 2014. If you want serious bling this series is for you! Run three of the five and get a great medal; run four of five and get a better, bigger medal; run all five and get a ridiculous "Level Five" award, a medal you can use for weight training.
