The Boston Common is the place to be at 12:00 noon on Monday, October 13th! Join thousands of women and be part of this historic athletic event that honors and celebrates WOMEN and their dedication and commitment to living a healthy lifestyle. A Strong Start—Building Decades of Traditions
The Tufts Health Plan 10K for Women started in 1977 as the Bonnie Belle Mini Marathon. Surprisingly over 2,231 women showed up at the start line rearing to go, far beyond predictions. This women’s athletic event for all comers has exceeded expectations ever since. It has proven over time that is a place in the running world for women. And it has proven, year after year, that running can be a major part of a healthy lifestyle for all women, all ages, whether running races weekly or running only the Tufts Health Plan 10K for Women.
Over the years the Tufts Health Plan 10K has helped thousands of women develop a passion for running, and sparked the concept of health and fitness for many. Over the years it has helped break barriers of traditional roles for women in and through athletics.
Powerful Competition and Joan Benoit Samuelson
The Tufts Health Plan 10K for Women attracts a formidable group of elite and Olympic runners as well as international running stars each year. Where else but at the Tufts Health Plan 10K for Women can you rub elbows with such a dazzling cast of runners—national and international—and run with them—on the same course at the same time?
One famous athlete in particular will be running: three-time winner of the Tufts Health Plan 10K for Women, Olympic Gold Medalist, and two-time Boston Marathon Champion Joan Benoit Samuelson. Her name is synonymous with women’s running and she is an inspiration to many across the country and around the world. She is also the spokesperson for the Tufts Health Plan 10K for Women.
Joan broke the course record with a performance of 31:39 in 1983, a mark that stands as the third fastest time, just seconds off the current record of 31:33 set last year by Sentayehu Ejigu of Ethiopia. She broke the previous record of 31:38 by New Zealand Olympian Ann Hannam in 1988. In 2013 Emily Infeld of nearby Concord, Massachusetts finished second to Ejigu with a remarkable 31:47.
Joan still runs the race, and very well, as she competes in—and often wins--the 50-59 age group (she turned 57 in May and won her division by 3:41 with her 38:48 last fall). “All the women in this race inspire me!” she has said many times.
Joan’s combination of outstanding performances with staying power over the years continues to make her an uplifting inspiration for runners of all abilities. "Now that I'm further back in the pack I gain inspiration by both the faster elite runners and the slower runners who have turned to running and set finishing goals for themselves," she said. Overview: The Tufts Health Plan 10K for Women runs through the lovely streets of Boston's Back Bay and along the Charles River in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The course will be completely closed to traffic. There will be six Poland Spring water stations as well as medical aid stations and digital clocks at every mile. This course is picturesque and the fall foliage always adds to the colorful promenade. It is fast, mostly flat and exciting with excellent views of the Back Bay, the river, and the skylines of both Boston and Cambridge.
It begins at the corner of Beacon and Charles Streets adjacent to the Boston Common where all race activities and festivities are held. It races west on Beacon Street through the Back Bay to Massachusetts Avenue where a right turn takes the field across the Charles River into Cambridge. After enjoying the wonderful views from the bridge the course turns right on Memorial Drive, passing the MIT campus to the left and the Charles River and Boston skyline on the right.
Nearing the Charles River Yacht Club the course reverses and heads west along Memorial and the Charles, inspiring leaders and all participants as they pass each other, producing a colorful scene of thousands of like-minded women running in coordinated camaraderie. Each runner enjoys her own race but feels the strength of something much greater.
Heading west on Memorial Drive the course passes Massachusetts Avenue and continues to the turn about at the Boston University Boathouse. Returning to the Harvard University Bridge and Mass Avenue, the field again crosses the river to Boston’s Back Bay and the beautiful foliage-lined Commonwealth Avenue mall. Nearing six miles at the Boston Public Garden the runners have only to round the Garden on Arlington Street and Boylston Streets to the dramatic left turn on Charles Street to their triumphant finish.
Awards and Prizes—Total Cash Prizes of $47,400
Awards will be given for Teams and Individuals, including age divisions and Wheelchair Winners. Cash awards totaling $26,200 will be given to the top five USATF club teams. Individual cash awards totaling $17,000 will be provided to the top five women overall, and another $4,000 will be awarded to the top three wheelchair athletes and top thee hand crank participants. Teams must be declared on race morning at Registration. A team consists of three to five members, with the score determined by the total time of the top three finishers. USATF Teams must be USATF member clubs and scoring teammates must be members of USATF. Age group awards will also be handed out for the top three finishers in each 10-year division. New to 2014 there will be a hand-cycling category offering $2,000 in prize money to the top three finishers.
1K for Kids presented by Stonyfield Yogurt
Kids join the fun and meet new friends! At 10:30 a.m. kids will have the opportunity to participate in a Fun Run and Fitness Walk around historic Boston Common led by Olympic Gold Medalist and Race Spokesperson, Joan Benoit Samuelson. There is no better way for children to be introduced to the many benefits of fitness than this! Kids will enjoy entertainment, face painting, and a healthy snack following their run/walk. This is a great opportunity to be active and enjoy family fun time.

9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. – Health and Fitness Expo and general activities:
Check out a variety of goods and services from leading brands in the health and fitness industry. The whole family will want to get in on the fun of sampling food and beverages, exploring activities at sponsor tents, and enjoying fitness related fun. Clothing and accessories can also be purchased. Join the fun before the race or after crossing the finish line.
10:30 a.m. – 1K for Kids presented by Stonyfield Yogurt
For children 12 and under. It not only promotes the importance of exercise, it’s a fun and unique experience for kids to enjoy.
10:45 a.m. – Cash Grant Presentation
Tufts Health Plan annually presents a $10,000 cash grant to a worthy charitable entity. Last year it was the Sharewood Free Health Care organization, which provides care for the medically underserved in the Boston region.
10:50 a.m. – Pre-Race Warm-Up
Join in the pre-race stretch. Listen to the music and get race-ready with a professionally led warm-up session. There will also be post-race stretches at 1:00 p.m. Take advantage of the complimentary Bag Check. Check your bag beginning at 10:00 a.m. and claim it by 2:00 p.m.
Noon – Race Start!
1:30 p.m. – Closing Ceremonies and Awards
Individual and team awards will be presented from the stage on the Boston Common Parade Grounds.
