The ideas and hopes of a little girl and the fierce determination of her family has turned a dream into reality, tragedy into triumph, and spirit into power in the ongoing battle against childhood cancers.
It started small, just a typical lemonade stand in front of the family home— childhood cancer patient Alexandra “Alex” Scott’s idea to give back and help others. A little girl wanted to help her hospital and raise money to assist other kids who were battling cancer. And as this idea caught on, and the recognition of her foresight, generosity, and determination became known, others began raising funds to help by starting their own events—lemonade stands and more--and bringing creativity and dedication to the efforts.
This concept and the spirit of Alexandra “Alex” Scott have helped many others to focus on the need for research and support. By the time Alex succumbed to cancer in 2004 at her home in Wynnewood, Pennsylvania, she knew she had raised, with the help of family and many friends, over a million dollars for the cause. But that was only the beginning. Her spirit and determination lives on, and Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation has now raised over $80 million, funding over 450 research grants to date. During this month of September, a tremendous effort by thousands of supporters—runners, walkers, bike enthusiasts, and helpful donors--will raise even more funds in support of this vital cause.
