This past weekend was the start of the 8th Annual USATF New England Mountain Running Series and the Wachusett Mountain Road Race.
Posted Saturday, 7 June, 2003
Wachusett is a 4.3 mile uphill mountain race (with 2 mild downhills) run on a paved access road to the summit of the mountain. The race climbs 1100' and is generally the fastest mountain race in New England (5:38 min per mile for male course record, 6:53 min per mile for female course record). Once again, this years race attracted many past & current members of the Teva US Mountain Running Team (and candidates) including:
Paul Low - 2002 USATF Mountain Runner of the Year
Eric Morse - 2001 USATF Mountain Runner of the Year
Dave Dunham - Silver medal, 1993 World Mountain Trophy
Richard Bolt - US Mountain Team 1999, 2002
Ben Nephew - 5th place @ 2002 US National 50k Trail Championships
Suzy West - US Mountain Team 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002
As expected, Paul and Eric lead the race from the start until Paul pulled ahead for good at the 1.5 mile mark. Paul had a strong race (winning in 24:50) backed up by several excellent snowshoe results this past winter and wins at the Merrimack River Trail Race and the 7 Sisters Trail Race. Eric
finished 2nd (25:03) in only his second race in 6 months. Eric recently won the Mt. Prospect Hill Climb in Lake George, NY. Results from other elite mountain/trail runners trying out for the 2003 Teva US Mountain Running Team:
