Bermuda is the ideal wintertime race destination, just a short flight from many East coast cities. It is an easy and accessible escape with that just-around-the-corner feel; you can reach Bermuda’s lovely shores in just two hours from Boston or New York.

Soak in the sublime pleasures of Bermuda’s island paradise. Discover for yourself why Mark Twain wrote, “You go to heaven if you want, I’d rather stay here in Bermuda.” Known for its picture postcard views, spectacular pink sand beaches and unique old world charm, Bermuda is sure to delight the most discerning visitor. Thanks to Bermuda’s enviable location along a breathtaking stretch of the Atlantic, this island paradise enjoys near perfect weather all year round. It is an ideal location and climate for just about any activity. Imagine enjoying simply delightful running weather in January! Yes, you can.

Join the excitement as the Bermuda Track and Field Association presents its annual Bermuda International Race Weekend, which amazingly just gets better each year. Runners from all over the world gather in Bermuda for this fun, challenging and exhilarating event. Beloved by islanders and visitors alike, the course may be demanding on the legs but is certainly easy on the eyes. Thanks to the tireless efforts of race director Anthony Raynor, Bermuda International Race Weekend is unsurpassed in its attention to details.

Among the weekend’s exciting offerings for runners are the following events: the KPMG Bermuda Invitational Mile, Front Street in Hamilton (Friday evening); the Bermuda International 10K and10K Walk starting and finishing at the National Sports Centre (Saturday morning); Bermuda International Half Marathon and Marathon, starting and finishing on Front Street, Hamilton (Sunday morning). If you are having trouble deciding which events to participate in, or if you are merely interested in bragging rights, consider taking on the Bermuda Triangle Challenge--run three races in three days and receive an additional beautiful commemorative medal in addition to the medals for the individual events. There are age categories of course, and two primary divisions—the half marathon division (with mile, 10K, and half marathon); and the marathon division, also with the mile and 10K. www.bermudaraceweekend.com

The Races

KPMG Bermuda Invitational Mile
The weekend festival of running events gets underway on Friday January 14th with this exciting signature event. You won’t want to miss the excitement and lively vibe on Front
Street in Hamilton that sets the tone for the entire race weekend. Bermudians are certainly dedicated to the sport of running, and you will feel their warm welcome everywhere. This is an invitation only event, in which the top twenty fastest runners in a series of trial events are invited to participate. Thousands of spectators will be on hand to witness top athletes compete in the races for Primary, Middle and Senior Schools, Local Adult and International Elite divisions. Bermuda Triangle Challenge participants will also complete this one-mile race as part of the Bermuda Triangle Challenge series. Bermuda Triangle Challenge participants do not have to qualify for this event.

Bermuda International 10K Race and 10K Walk
The National Sports Center in Devonshire is the place to be Saturday morning, January 15th. This is one great race! The 10K is a scenic and challenging loop course offering magnificent vistas filled with hibiscus, oleander, palms and views of the beautiful turquoise waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Runners of every level can draw inspiration from some of the best and brightest and most beautiful views that Bermuda has to offer. Enjoy the thrill as local Bermudians cheer the runners on from the start to the electrifying finish line on the Sports Centre track. This is the only event that takes place at the Sports Centre—all others start and end on Front Street in Hamilton. Challenging and fun, the course ends on a high note with one final hill climb. Be sure to save some energy for the end!

The Bermuda International Marathon and Half Marathon
The anticipation and excitement along Front Street on Sunday morning is guaranteed to energize runners and get them off to a good start. This event features a two loop course for the marathon and single loop for the half. Half marathoners will follow a 13.1 mile scenic loop that provides full appreciation of the island’s beauty as it follows shoreline and narrow winding coral, stone and flower lined roads. Marathoners will complete two laps and enjoy breathtaking views of the north and South coasts, combining the changing shades of blue and green of the ocean with the bright pastel hues of the surrounding buildings. What a fantastic way to see the sights that are so unique to this island.

Bermuda Triangle Challenge
Now in its fourth year, the so called granddaddy event is a chance to earn serious bragging rights by running three races in three days, earning a total of four medals! This is a combination event which includes the KPMG Bermuda Invitational Mile, the Bermuda International 10K and either the half or full marathon. All participants will receive beautifully designed finisher’s medallions in each race as well as a special Bermuda Triangle Challenge medal and T-shirt to commemorate this achievement.

Race Headquarters
The official race headquarters for the Bermuda International Race Weekend is the Fairmont Hamilton Princess set on the shores of picturesque Hamilton Harbor. With 450 well appointed guest rooms, fresh and saltwater swimming pools, two restaurants, this hotel is a luxury resort and an elegant tribute to the old world splendor that is Bermuda. Just a short walk to Hamilton’s colorful downtown district and the marathon, half marathon and mile start and finish lines, it is as convenient as it is beautiful. The hotel is also the location for the health and fitness expo, number and packet pickup, pasta party and awards celebration on Sunday evening.

Beautiful Bermuda
Bermuda is just as much a state of mind as it is a place. Feeling at home in this friendly island paradise seems automatic—if you are there you are in a relaxed and enjoyable state. Bermudians are thrilled to share its unique beauty and lively culture. The distinctive culture combines a reverence for British traditions with the relaxed attitude befitting a subtropical island. It is truly the best of both worlds.

Although this island is justifiably best known for its shimmering turquoise waters, lovely beaches, quaint cottages and lush golf courses, there is a great deal more here for the active minded traveler. As one of Britain’s oldest colonies, the island has more than 400 years of history to claim. No matter what you choose, from strolling along the winding side streets and back alleys of the 400 year old town of St George, or heading to one of Bermuda’s pink sand beaches, enjoying top notch restaurants, or taking advantage of premier shopping, you can be certain that there is something here for everyone. Bermuda may be small but it boasts a wide array of activities and diversions to keep you busy for as long as you have the energy.
