Miles of great surfing beaches, magnificent rainforests, wildlife and theme parks, and a wide variety of sporting activities are just some of the reasons why Queensland’s Gold Coast is known as one of the world’s leading vacation destinations. But these are by no means the only ones. You can travel just a short distance into the hinterland and explore some of the most interesting little towns you will find anywhere in the world. Take a trip a bit further north and you come across the incredible Glass House Mountains and the world famous Australia Zoo, home of the legendary Crocodile Hunter.

Right now the value of the US$ is very strong against the A$ and you will get great value for your money. On the Gold Coast you will find accommodation and restaurants to suit all budgets. Add to all this an average winter temperature of around 70 deg. F and Australia’s number one Marathon and you might want to start packing your bags.

The Gold Coast Airport Marathon course is flat, fast and scenic, running along the magnificent Gold Coast beaches and broadwater. Since its creation by the Rotary Club of Surfers’ Paradise in 1978, it has grown into one of the world’s leading marathons and in 2008 participation grew to over 21,000. It is highly acclaimed for its superb organization and is a member of the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS) and the Oceania Athletics Association.

If you have been training hard for a personal best, this is the marathon you want to run. Not only is it a flat, fast course, but you will have the added advantage of world class runners as pacers to encourage you along the way and make sure that you are on pace to reach your time goal. You might well be sharing the course with one of Australia’s running legends such as Steve Moneghetti who has guided many runners to a 3-hour marathon in previous years. How often do you get to run with a 4-time Olympian?

Steve Moneghetti, 4-time Olympian, Australia s 2nd fastest ever marathon runner, Commonwealth Games gold medallist: “The Gold Coast Airport Marathon is such a well run and professionally organised event. It is on a flat and fast course alongside one of the world’s great coastlines and the atmosphere out on the course and at the finish complete the package for a truly wonderful experience.

At the Gold Coast Airport Marathon, there is no excuse for anyone to get bored just hanging around. There are races to suit all ages and all levels of fitness, ranging from the Marathon to a Community Walk. In addition to the Marathon there is a choice of a Half Marathon (21.097k/13.1 miles), which has the same fast, flat scenic course, a 10k (6.2 miles), or the Community Walk 7.5k (4.66 Miles). The kids haven’t been forgotten either. For the 5-14 year olds there is a 4k Junior Dash (2.48 miles) and for the 5-10 year olds there is a 2.25k Junior Dash (1.39 miles olds. The enthusiasm and talent of these young runners will both entertain and amaze you.

Even your family and friends at home can be a part of your experience. Your progress can be followed by live web results at each 5km point with live webcast to watch the race on the day.

The crowd support and musical entertainment along the course and at start and finish will inspire you. It is so good that a new word has evolved to describe the emotion – ‘runspiration’! And the cheers from the crowds in the grandstands at the finish line will probably send you home with goose bumps.

All finishers receive a commemorative medallion and shirt. Marathon runners have their names on their bib numbers. This makes a great souvenir to take home and you’ll find that spectators will cheer for you by name, adding that personal touch. It can make all the difference in those final miles.

With the strong US$ you might want to head to the asics Sport & Leisure Expo for some ‘guilt-free’ shopping where you can be sure that you are getting a good deal, and you definitely won’t want to miss out on the Legends Motivational Carbo Lunch on Saturday. This is an opportunity of a lifetime to get some handy tips from running legends whilst carbo-loading for the big event.

The Gold Coast Airport Marathon is undoubtedly one of the best organized marathon events in the world, so don’t miss this opportunity to do what you love to do most in one of the most beautiful locations in the world. Come ‘down under’ for the Gold Cost Airport Marathon in 2009 and experience running at its best.
