A new half marathon in Killington, Vermont has the running world buzzing. Everyone, it seems, is doing half marathons these days, and here is one for all comers, all paces. It has an accompanying 5K and all the amenities. It is also one of the EIGHT events (many new) that make up the New England Half Marathon Tour 2013, outlined below. Best of all, it benefits the Killington Pico Rotary Charities, and provides additional funds in support of the Woodstock Union High School Cross Country and Track teams. So know that part of your registration fee will go to strengthen the running community and to worthwhile charitable causes. But the big draw here is the challenge.

It is set in the midst of a gorgeous region that has a very different look season to season. It is famous for the excellent skiing, but mid June in south central Vermont is absolutely stunning. Killington is about 27 miles west of Lebanon, New Hampshire and easy to access via Interstate 89 and US Route 4 via Woodstock and a scenic highway tour of 17 miles east of Rutland. This is near the boyhood home of President Calvin Coolidge (Plymouth) and some of the best skiing east of the Mississippi.

Half marathoners will receive custom tech shirts and finisher medals and 5K runners get unique cotton T-shirts. Overall winners and age group winners will receive pint glasses, and all half marathon finishers will receive an attractive custom medal, a nice touch to remember this inaugural event. Please visit the race website for details:

The Yankee Timing Company will be using the “B tag” Chronotrack system (timing chip built into the race bib) so you know the results will be both accurate and immediate. A well supported course with 6 aid stations for the half promises fast times and runners will be rewarded with fresh fruit and pastries at the post race celebration. It is presented by 3C Race Productions and is sponsored in part by the town of Killington and the Killington Pico Rotary Club.

The Course
The Half Marathon will start at 9:00 a.m. followed by the 5K at 9:30. The race begins and ends at the ski lodge at the base of the lifts. The course traverses rural roads along the foothills of the Green Mountains with two loops and two out-and-backs. The course has a beautiful backdrop as the mountains rise to the west, including Pico Peak, Killington Peak of course, Shrewsbury Peak, Salt Ash Mountain and Blue ridge Mountain. The entire race goes on country roads just west of famous Routes 100 and US 4, a mostly forested roadway where natural beauty is everywhere around you.

3C Race Productions
This company produces many races, including the Wolf Hollow Half Marathon and the Moose on the Loose 10-mile trail run and the New England Half Marathon Tour 2013 as outlined below. This is a full service and very professional organization that manages and produces events all over New England and sometimes beyond—over 125 events per year, including road races, trail races, triathlons, biathlons and snow shoe competitions. Founded in 2002, this company has helped provide funds and donations for many non-profits totaling about 1.5 million dollars for a variety of charities thus far.

Please visit their website for information on the race schedule, directions, recent news, opportunities, results, photos, videos and more:

New England Half Marathon Tour 2013
New this year is the already popular New England Half Marathon Tour 2013, which includes eight excellent events held in six states. Each has both a half marathon and a 5K so that all attendees have an event to their liking. Races for this year begin with the Lime Rock Half Marathon in Lakeville, Connecticut (June 9, 2013), followed by Killington (June 16) and Black Bear Half Marathon on August 25 in Waterville Valley, NH. The other five include Twin Reservoirs (MA, 7/21/13), Freeport (ME, 9/8/13), Fall River (MA, 10/20/13), Colt State Park (RI, 11/10/13), and Wolf Hollow (NH, 11/24/13),

Several new half marathons are planned for next year to expand the circuit for 2014, including Narragansett (RI), Old Orchard Beach (ME), Speedway (NH), Boothbay Harbor, (ME), Moose on the Loose (NH), and Saratoga Springs (NY).

This is Your Half Marathon
You have been getting ready to do one this spring, so here it is. Whether it is your first or your 101st, this is one you should do. Killington is a unique place for many reasons, and there will be lots to see in the Green Mountains and on the way to and from—check out the cool restaurants and unique places for lodging, as well as a few micro breweries.

Come and enjoy the fun at a very different and enjoyable event. The awards, the amenities and post race festivities with fruit and pastries will be a lot of fun, headed by race director Michael Amarello. For additional information you can contact Michael at 603-429-8879 or by e-mail at

Registration is very reasonable but don’t delay, you can save money over race day registration and you will want to get one of those custom shirts.
