The ninth annual Rhody 5K at the impressive Twin River complex in Lincoln, Rhode Island, offers a unique opportunity for women and men to race separately; it is a rare opportunity to watch each other compete, and for some an opportunity to take the kids along and do the child-care handoff—then watch the kids run their own little race on the track later. This will be the USATF-NE 5K Championship, and one of seven races to be named to the prestigious USATF New England Grand Prix; it is the only New England Grand Prix event in the Ocean State, and the third race in the Grand Prix overall.

The Rhody 5K joins an impressive list of events for the 2008 series, one of the best USATF Association series in the country. The New Bedford Half Marathon and the Medical Center 6K have already run. This year’s Rhody 5K will be held on June 1, 2008 in Lincoln with the men’s race stepping off at 9:30 a.m., and the women at 10:00 a.m. The kids’ K ¼ mile fun run is at 10:45 a.m. circling the track. The races will be followed by the award-winning post race party and BBQ, with a lot of music—live and recorded—to add to the festivities.

There will be $7,000 in prize money offered (see the Website for the breakdown), including prizes for USATF teams. There are 10-year age groups through 80+ (seniors 70-and-over registration is free). The race is centrally located, easy to get to from anywhere in New England, and offers plenty of parking.

The race starts and finishes at the Twin River South entrance. Most of the race is on the Twin River grounds, with about one mile on adjacent roadways. It finishes on the track. On-line registration is available, and race day registration and packet pick up will be available from 8:00 a.m. to 9:15 a.m. near the Twin River South entrance. Please go to www.rhody5k.com for additional details and for directions. The address is 100 Twin River Road, Lincoln, Rhode Island, 02865.

Twin River has invested over $220 million on this enormous gaming and entertainment complex, with at least six restaurants plus the food court; intimate entertainment settings as well as large venues for top headline stars, and there are spacious gaming areas too. You will be impressed with these facilities. www.twinriver.com

And you will be impressed with the excellent race organization. The Rhody 5K is being managed by Dave McGillivray, the Race Director of the Boston Marathon, and his race management company, DMSE (Dave McGillivray Sports Enterprises). They will be using the Championchip race timing system with Granite State Race Services.

As a USATF New England Grand Prix event, it will be highly competitive and run at a championship level with some of the region’s best competing. It is also an event geared to new and beginning runners, those who are new to racing, and to families looking for a healthy and enjoyable day for the entire family.

The post race festivities are excellent—food, beverages, and entertainment. The award-winning BBQ and general atmosphere are in a special class for road racing, a class worthy of a top level entertainment complex.

Last year’s Rhody was an exciting affair, as three men hit the line within one second in a photo finish, and all three were residents of Providence, Rhode Island. Mark Carroll was awarded first in 14:27, as Martin Fagen was also clocked in 14:27 on this very fast, flat course. Patrick Tarpy was one second back and Nate Jenkins of Lowell, Massachusetts was also in the hunt at 14:33. The Providence Irish connection also showed in the women’s race as Roisin McGettigan of Providence won in a world class 16:39. Maria Servin and Joann Matthews battled it out for second and third overall and the masters win with 18:15 and 18:16 respectively.

USATF-New England Grand Prix
This legendary New England Grand Prix is one of the top regional race series in the USA, any way you measure it—quality of races and level of competition. Few of the other 57 USATF Associations around the country can match this outstanding series.

The 2008 version kicked off on March 16 with the New Bedford Half Marathon, followed by the Medical Center 6K on May 11. Rhody will be the third of seven races, with one each month (except April) through to the Baystate Marathon on October 19. The Rhody 5K has been selected multiple times for this honor.

The other remaining races for the 2008 USATF-New England Championships and Grand Prix:

• July 29 - Newburyport 10 Mile, Newburyport MA
• Aug 9 - Bridge of Flowers 10K, Shelburne Falls MA
• Sept 6 - Ollie 5 Mile, South Boston MA
• Oct 19 - Bay State Marathon, Lowell MA

Please check the USATF-New England Website at www.usatfne.org for additional details and information on scoring and participation.
The Rhody 5K is an event you definitely do not want to miss, with championship status, dual races, track finish, great fun atmosphere and family friendly environment, great facilities, and outstanding post race food. Visit Lincoln and run a great race and take a look around the Ocean State. For additional details go to www.rhody5k.com or call 877-82river ext. 8364 or 401-723-3200 ext. 8364.
