"I have so many great memories of growing up in New England, so I always look forward to coming back to Providence and running. The CVS Caremark Downtown 5K draws high quality athletes because of the fantastic organization and support from the city."
Shalane Flanagan, Olympic Bronze Medalist, American Record Holder, 5K and 10K, Winner CVS Caremark Downtown 5K, 2008.

This is a big year for the CVS Caremark Providence Downtown 5K – it’s the 20th anniversary! This year the event will continue to grow and serve the community like never before. This event has become the most competitive 5K in New England, combined with kids’ races, high school competition, and family fun, there is so much going on that you can’t help but get excited!

It takes a special combination of excitement and competition for a road race to make it to the 20th anniversary. It’s a testament to the CVS Caremark Downtown 5K that it has not only survived but thrived to become one of the biggest, most competitive, premier events on the fall calendar.

USATF 5K Championships – Run with the Best!
The race is once again the USATF 5 km Championships for men and women - both individual and team. Come to the center of Providence and watch history being made and see US National Champions being crowned. There is no other sport where world class stars and average runners compete in the same event at the same time. Come and share the experience.

A top slate of US and international competitors will be vying for prizes at the CVS Caremark Downtown 5K again this year, including most of the top runners from both the women’s and men’s races. Last year 21 women ran under 17:00, with the top 6 under 16:00. On the men’s side 24 zipped in under 15:00, with the top three under 14:00. Race Director Charlie Breagy expects the same high level of competition for this year.

If you’ve never seen professional middle distance runners compete, you should come to Providence to check it out. The 2008 race winner, Anthony Famiglietti ran 13:41, averaging 4:25 minutes per mile; and the top 11 men finished under 14:30! That’s a real race, people! These athletes are the best in the world; thoroughbreds – don’t miss this chance to see them in action.

A large, world-class event that is local and easy to get to from Boston and all New England
One of the great things about the event is that it combines the best of a world-class championship with the convenience of a local event. The Amtrak and MBTA station for trains from Boston, New York, and Maine is immediately adjacent to race registration and the race start and finish in Providence – no muss no fuss - a world-class event literally at your door step.

The start, finish, registration and all events are right there in the center of Providence near the State Capitol and unique Providence Place. It’s all super-organized and very convenient. This is one of the best 5K races in the country, the largest one-day event in Providence, and, with 20 years of experience, it is one smooth operation and runs like clockwork.

It’s got easy access for drivers as well. The highways put you right into downtown. Parking is free at the Providence Statehouse lots for the first 1,000, first come first served, and only $1.00 at Providence Place (check their Website at http://www.providenceplace.com/html/MallDirections.asp ), and it is all just steps from the race. For an event of this size and class, it is thoroughly convenient and well organized for both runners and spectators.

Efficient Machine
In its twenty-year history the CVS Caremark Downtown 5K has developed an organization that executes like a well-oiled machine. Many of the volunteers have been on board for the whole time. You cannot overestimate the value of an experienced race organization – especially for a high profile event like this. You’ll know right away that you have the benefit of an experienced crew, because even the announcer is a 20-year vet!

Over 600 volunteers make things hum right along. Anyone who has been involved with race organization knows that volunteers – especially experienced volunteers – can make or break the runners’ experience. The CVS Caremark Downtown 5K in Providence has the veterans and numbers to make sure everything goes as planned year after year.

You will be surprised at how convenient registration is and how you fly through the process. This year they have added the new D-tag chip from ChronoTrack by Granite State Race Services to make things even more convenient for runners—and volunteers.

Let us entertain you!
The CVS Caremark Downtown 5K has a tremendous atmosphere. As an established event it is a fixture in the local calendar – a big event and a celebration that everyone looks forward to and counts on each year.

The event has all the amenities to make you comfortable and keep you entertained. There are up to twenty bands playing along the course. There is a big post-race concert this year headlined by “Steve Smith and the Nakeds”. Bring the family. Run the race, and enjoy the party.

This is a family event with a reputation for excelent youth and school races, including “All Kids Can!”
Don’t be fooled by the elite field of Olympians; this is for everyone. There are eighteen youth races appropriate for all age groups. The CVS Caremark Downtown 5K is a celebration of youth and fitness for children.

Every kid – from 1 year old through high school – has their own special event. This is a perfect way to get kids excited about their initial ‘joy of running’. Last year there were over 1500 entrants. Call your coach and get your team signed up for the CVS Caremark Downtown 5K, high school or youth races.

The organization has historically supported youth running through both participation and donations. High school programs from all over New England are invited. They get free entry. They get a free T-shirt, and they have fun. And they can watch some of the best runners in the world compete on the 5K course – then they get to run too!

The Tufts Health Plan High School Inspirational 3K run starts at 12:15 p.m. This is a noncompetitive (although you wouldn’t know it from some of the runners!) event that lets the high school teams run together and have fun. This year there will be a prize for the ‘best dressed” team as the kids are encouraged to add some creativity to their team uniforms to add even more enjoyment to a memorable event.

Traditionally CVS has given ten $500 donations to teams that attend. This year, new sponsor Tufts Health Plan is matching this generosity by giving away another ten prizes of $500 to teams. This can be a windfall to a school’s athletic program, and is a super investment in the future of distance running and health.

With the spirit of inclusiveness there is also the “All Kids Can” event where children who are intellectually or physically challenged can also get in on the fun and competition. No one is left out. Everyone is welcome at the CVS Caremark Downtown 5K.

Unrivaled charity impact -“Ready, Set, Give!”
The CVS Caremark Downtown 5K has an amazing and high impact charity program. You will be hard pressed to find another event of this type that gives so much charitable support. In 2008 alone they donated over $250,000 to charities. The total donations have now surpassed $1 Million. It’s Just another example of an event that supports the sport and the community in so many ways.

Top-shelf sponsorship makes it all possible. These major charitable contributions to over 40 charities and schools is made possible by long term support of major sponsors. In addition to long-time sponsors CVS-Caremark and Life Fitness this year Tufts Health Plan is on board to bring even more support and success.

Gone Green!
The CVS Caremark Downtown 5K was one of the first events of its kind to embrace becoming a “green” race. They have taken direct and positive steps to reduce their impact on the environment. All the event byproducts are sorted and recycled. Special care is taken to use biodegradable and low impact materials.
