Saratoga Springs, a small city of about 27,000, lies in the upper Hudson River Valley surrounded by three mountain ranges: the Adirondacks, the Catskills, and the Taconics. It is located in upstate New York but is easily accessible by Interstates 90 and I-87 from all directions. It lies north of Albany and Schenectady and south of Lake George and the immense Adirondack Forest Preserve, and not far from the Massachusetts and Vermont borders.
Saratoga Spa State Park is an ideal location for a half marathon, with its famed flora and reputed health-providing properties of its mineral springs. There are 12 of the operating 22 mineral springs located within the state park, which was established to preserve the springs, some of which are geyser-like spouts.
The city of Saratoga surrounding this incredible park is also a true destination with springs and more than 1,000 excellent examples Victorian architecture. Broadway, Caroline Street, and Putnam Street with their shops and restaurants and vibrant art community lure thousands of tourists in a surrounding setting of beauty at every turn. http://www.saratogaspringshm.com/
The Saratoga Springs Strong to Serve Half Marathon and accompanying 5K will run on a double two-loop course within the 2,500-acre Saratoga Spa State Park, another in the 14-race series of “Great Races in Great Places”. At times the course runs on park roadways and at times on wood chip-covered paths.
You will be able to pick up your race bib, T-shirt and make-your-own goodie bag the day before the race from noon to 5:00 p.m. at iRun Local, the Spa City’s running specialty store at 18 Congress Street, Saratoga Springs, NY 12866. http://www.irunlocal.com/
Pick up will also be available race morning beginning at 6:00 a.m. The 5K has the same starting line and finish point as the half marathon.
The half marathon steps off at 7:30 a.m. with the 5K running at 8:00. The course passes such legendary facilities as the Saratoga Performing Arts Center, Spa Little Theater, the Peerless and Victory swimming complexes, Hotel Gideon Putnam Resort, two museums, two golf courses, three restaurants, Geyser Creek, three playgrounds, the Lincoln Bathhouse and Roosevelt Baths, and the Hall of Baths. It has classical architecture and is listed as a National Historic Landmark. http://www.nysparks.com/parks/saratogaspa/maps.aspx
Both pool areas offer showers, lockers, restrooms and changing areas. Saratoga Spa State Park is a Jewel in the New York Park System and offers unique activities with the mineral baths and museums, performing arts with many, many bands and nationally famous recording artists during the summer, plus a jazz festival. It also has traditional recreational opportunities with picnic areas and walking paths, 12 miles of trails and certified 5K and 10K race courses. The location is 19 Roosevelt Drive, Saratoga Springs, NY 12866.
What a great location right in the center of a great tourist destination with so much to do and see in the region. This is one of 14 New England Half Marathon Tour events as shown below, but the ONLY one in New York this year.
The Saratoga Springs Strong to Serve Half Marathon and 5K has the New England/New York running world buzzing. What a gorgeous setting, and what a terrific destination. And 20% of race fees will be donated to support Strong to Serve, and they will be providing volunteers to help with the event.
It is a half marathon for all comers, all paces, and an ideal race for beginners in the 5K. It is also a terrific initial half marathon for those looking to step up to that distance. Both the 5K and the half marathon have all the amenities.
As with all New England Half Marathon Tour events, their amenities are impressive. Half marathoners will receive custom tech shirts and 5K runners get unique cotton T-shirts. The top three overall winners, women and men, and top three age group winners will receive logoed pint glasses (both races), and all half marathon finishers will receive an attractive custom finishers’ medal, a nice touch to remember this unique inaugural event. Please visit the race website for details: http://www.saratogaspringshm.com/
Both events will be using the “B tag” Chronotrack system (timing chip built into the race bib) so you know the results will be both accurate and immediate.
