The Smuttynose “Will Run for Beer” 5K is the biggest bash for LOCO Sports and will close the 2014 WRFB Series, fittingly, with an excellent 5K and a great post race party at the brewery. Yes, they have gone back to the traditional 5K distance on this one and have laid out a great single loop course that is relatively flat and has few turns. And Smuttynose Brewery, their brand new state-of-the-art brew house, provides a great location for the post race and post-series celebrations.
And it will be the second day of summer!
Not only will they have the 5K race awards, which go three deep overall and three deep in each of the 10-year age groups; but they will also be providing the overall series awards based on accumulated points over the seven races. And all runners who have done five or more events will receive the coveted “Will Run for Beer” wind jacket with the new logo.
As with many LOCO races, the post race celebration is not to be missed. Live music from a rock n’ roll band will enliven the festivities, and there will be a large white beer tent/beer garden with Smuttynose craft beers. There will be a cookout too with burgers and hot dogs, coleslaw, and tasty Stonyfield Farm products. And their red “awards tent” will be busy.
In fact, just running this race will be an award in itself. The course runs on rural roads with fields and farms and those quintessential New England stone walls. There is little elevation change and the first mile is a straight gallop on Towle Farm Road from Smuttynose. It is a USATF-certified course. There is a right turn on Timber Swamp Road right after the mile mark, and the course follows this road, with a gradual curve to the right, almost to the two-mile mark. A right turn on Mary Batchelder Road takes runners back to Towle Farm Road on the clockwise loop; and the left turn on Towle Farm is only the third turn in the race. Runners reverse course on Towle Farm Road back to Smuttynose and the triumphant finish—and the terrific post race bash!
Register early for this one as it will definitely sell out: http://smuttynose5k.com/
They will be using the B-tag, the Chronotrack computer scoring system with the chip built into the bib number—yours to keep. Yankee Timing Company will provide immediate and accurate results. There is an excellent course map on the Website, along with directions and parking information (only two miles off Interstate 95 at the Hampton tolls). Bib number pickup begins at 7:30 a.m. on race day at Smuttynose. Car pooling is recommended.
The “Will Run for Beer” Race Series
This series has closed for 2014. It runs on the Massachusetts North Shore and the Seacoast of New Hampshire has created quite a buzz and a strong following. It is in its fifth season. There are seven events, and nine race combinations. Planning ahead, you sure don’t want to miss out on the 2015 season.
This unique series is a gem because of the unusual nature of the scoring system and the terrific selection of races. Also important are the flawless organization by LOCO Sports, the “enjoyment factor” of the events, and the top notch races with beer themes from January 1 to June 22, 2014. That’s right, it all began January 1st with the great party races to celebrate the New Year: 1st Run in Lowell and the Hangover Classic in Salisbury, Massachusetts.

Please note that the final two races include both the return of the popular Margaritas 5K, as well as the Smuttynose “Will Run for Beer” 5K finale.
