This innovative organization has created quite an impact in event management in the two years it has been in business. FitPlanet works with organizers of mass participation events of all types to help them implement green practices in a very real, measurable, and cost-effective way. They work with events of all sizes to provide input for environmental practices and the high-impact marketing advantage that goes with those efforts. They concentrate on all areas of ‘going green’, including:

• Reduction and diversion of waste from landfill
• Reduction and offsetting of greenhouse gas emissions
• Use of recyclable and/or compostable materials
• Working with sponsors, vendors and athletes to reduce their environmental footprint
• Developing Sustainability Sponsorships for race organizers

FitPlanet helps plan and implement a green program from beginning to end, including marketing and promotion, on-the-ground operational support on event day, including managing clean up, and providing a post-event report and recommendations for future green initiatives, which is becoming very important to sponsors. Visit www.afitplanet.com for information and details.

Their planning and operational expertise can lead to resource and cost savings, reduced environmental impact, and a proven way to market events—raising the profile and reputation of events using the power that comes from creating positive change; producing quantifiable benefit, and true differentiation. FitPlanet helps provide what runners and sponsors want, and what all communities and municipalities are demanding event organizers provide.

Should you reduce your event’s carbon footprint? The question is no longer ’should you.’ The question is: How soon can it be done and by how much?

Consulting Services Customized for Your Event
Athletes for a Fit Planet has developed the tools and expertise to save you time, resources and money on your way to creating green events. Your organization does not have to reinvent the wheel. FitPlanet can help, whether you’re just starting out, already on your way, or fully committed to producing 100% sustainable practices including certification to the Council for Responsible Sport (www.resport.org) standard. The company supports the Council for Responsible Sport’s environmental standards, and will help events prepare for certification, which provides both marketing and practical advantage. FitPlanet Chief Green Officer Bruce Rayner is a member of the Council’s Advisory Board. To date, FitPlanet has worked with a number of events to achieve certification, including Los Angeles Marathon, Marine Corps Marathon, Urban Epic Triathlon in Portland ME, and the 10K Run for Food and Shelter in Nashua NH.

FitPlanet also provides athletes with a Green Events Directory, so they can make informed, environmentally responsible decisions about where to participate and how to spend their money; and sponsors can decide where and how to commit their sponsorship dollars. Additionally, FitPlanet’s website provides online news and information about environmental issues, products and services. A growing number of sponsors are taking the green trend seriously, and are taking into account an event’s commitment to environmental practices in their selection criteria.

Working with Many Events, Large, Medium, and Small
FitPlanet has worked with over 100 events across North America. Two New England events are the Reach the Beach Relay in New Hampshire, one of the largest 24-hour relays in the country, and the Urban Epic Boston, a sprint triathlon in South Boston. In 2009, both the Urban Epic and Reach the Beach Relay were sponsored by Stonyfield Organic, the New Hampshire-based company, in partnership with FitPlanet. The races were green thanks to Stonyfield.

For two years now, FitPlanet has helped Reach the Beach Relay recycle waste from the start at Cannon Mountain all along the 200-mile course to the finish at Hampton Beach State Park. In addition, the race uses non-toxic eco-friendly portable toilets, offers a ride-share program, provides reusable recycling team bags, and more. The official environmental charity for the 2009 Reach the Beach Relay was the Appalachian Mountain Club, which used the money contributed by the relay teams to fund environmental educational programs and reduce its own carbon footprint.

Likewise, Urban Epic Boston worked with all stakeholders, including participants, volunteers, vendors, and sponsors to ensure a green event and supply line.

“The Urban Epic brought triathletes and local community residents together and left little significant environmental impact behind,” according to Amy VanHaren, Marketing and PR Director for Urban Epic Events.. “With the help of Stonyfield Organic—the event’s sustainability sponsor—and Athletes for a Fit Planet, a leading environmental events consulting firm, Urban Epic Boston achieved its goal of implementing progressive green race initiatives and minimizing negative impacts on the city. The event’s sustainability mission was a huge success; more than 90 percent of event waste was recycled or composted,”

Other green initiatives at the 2009 Urban Epic Boston included reusable goodie bags, eco-friendly recycled polyester/bamboo race shirts, and organic and local food from Chipotle Mexican Grill, Stonyfield, and Cabot Cheese. In addition, bicycles and low-emission hybrids were used for all pace and sweep vehicles, donated by local sponsors Urban AdvenTours and Zipcar, according to VanHaren.

A partial list of other events using the services of FitPlanet includes:

• Amica Marathon and Half Marathon, Newport, RI
• Applefest Half Marathon, Hollis, NH
• Beach to Beacon 10K, Cape Elizabeth, ME
• Cox Providence Rhode Races, Providence, Rhode Island
• EDF Energy Birmingham Half Marathon, Birmingham, England
• Earth Run, Ottawa, Ontario
• Los Angeles Marathon, Los Angeles, CA
• Marin County Half Marathon and Triathlon, San Rafael, CA
• New York City Triathlon, New York, NY
• Rock n’ Roll Marathon, Seattle, WA
• Rock n’ Roll Half Marathon, San Jose, CA
• Toronto Waterfront Marathon, Toronto, Ontario

Pledge of Sustainability
Recently Athletes for a FitPlanet introduced the Pledge of Sustainability to provide event organizers recognition for their efforts to become more environmentally responsible. This program was launched in partnership with The Active Network and the Council for Responsible Sport and is the starting point for events to achieve ReSport certification.

Events taking the Pledge are listed in the FitPlanet Green Events Directory, and have access to the FitPlanet Resource Center, including a “how to” manual for greening events, a 60-minute Webinar, a Green Business Directory, and other benefits. In addition, the event gets to display the Pledge of Sustainability logo on its website and in their marketing materials.
