The third annual Smuttynose Palooza 5K and Karaoke Contest comes to you on March 7, 2015, at Salisbury Beach. This is a flat and fast 5K with beach, marsh and ocean views in the resort area of Salisbury. And when we say flat, we mean FLAT.
Race headquarters is the Carousel Lounge, where the post race party will be held, highlighted by Smuttynose craft beers and some great snacks during the very entertaining Karaoke Contest. Karaoke is open for FREE to all registered runners. Yes, the competition doesn’t end at the finish line—this karaoke contest is open to all participants.
LOCO Sports will be your host, so organization and amenities will be top of the line. It has a 9:00 a.m. start, with T-shirt and bib pickup from 7:30 a.m. Temporary, mobile lockers are available near the start and finish, provided by Blue Locker as an option.
This race is a gem by any standard, and it will be the third installment in the now classic "Will Run for Beer" Seacoast Series. This is a beautiful course with the start line—and finish line—on Ocean Front South near the Carousel Lounge. There are only four turns in the entire course, which is run primarily in the awesome Salisbury Beach Reservation.
Salisbury and the Carousel Lounge are easy to find and get to. Routes I-95 and I-495 go through town, as does US Route 1, and Route 1A. State Route 110 terminates in town (at the intersection of Route 1), so you have easy access from all directions. The Carousel Lounge is located at 27 Ocean Front South, Salisbury, MA 01952.
As with most LOCO races, this one is expected to sell out, so don’t hesitate to get in on it. This is a comparatively low fee race if you register now—it’s only $25.00 from now to January 31; it increases to $30.00 from February 1 to March 4, and will be $35 on race day (if available).
So check it out and get all the info on the race website, including course map and description, amenities, FAQ’s, sign up instructions for Karaoke, sponsors, directions and parking, previous results, photos, contacts, and information on other LOCO events: Smuttynose Palooza 5K
The Course and the Salisbury Beach Reservation
With few turns and no hills—not even a serious bump—this is a great course and a very pleasant one. It starts in town near the beach. It begins about eight feet above sea level, and remains that way throughout. The Carousel Lounge overlooks the beach with giant windows providing a panoramic view of the Atlantic Ocean and the beach
Most of the 3.1 miles traverse Salisbury Beach Reservation, a beautiful regional resource which is operated by the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation. As you view it on the run it will be generally quiet, although you may see dozens of bird watchers and photographers—last year there were some great sightings during the race.
The reservation has about 3.9 miles of beach on its 521 acres, and includes 484 campsites, bathhouses, picnic areas, playgrounds, boat ramps, grill installations, a pavilion, trails, and best of all—acres of salt marsh and wildlife habitat.
The course goes out-and-back so you get views on both sides and from different angles. The finish is back at the Carousel Lounge, where the beer and music await.

The Town of Salisbury
During pauses in the Karaoke Contest you may hear echoes from famous entertainers such as Louie Armstrong, Glen Miller, Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, and numerous other legends. They, and many other famous stars, entertained in Salisbury, which for many years was a leading summer venue for the big names. It was also chock full of arcades and amusement parks with thrill rides such as roller coasters, wild swings, and bumper cars and much more.
There was a famous hand carved carousel named Flying Horses installed in 1914. In fact we believe the Carousel Lounge sits very close to the spot where the carousel ran for many decades.
The area was inhabited by the Penacook tribes and then settled by the English in 1638—18 years after Plymouth. From the middle 1800’s it became a go-to beach resort and thrived during the early 1900’s. Following World War II it had a big resurgence and remained strong through the 1970’s.
Today’s Salisbury has the same beautiful beach and wetlands and is a beehive of activity in the summer. Its population of about 8,300 swells substantially as beach-goers throng to the shore and to the Reservation during warmer months. Early March is a great time to visit this Oceanside town, bordered by Seabrook, New Hampshire on the north and the mouth of the Merrimack River on the South. It is the northernmost town in Massachusetts.
