Historic Westfield
Westfield’s nickname is “The Whip City” because it was the epicenter of buggy whip manufacturing, a thriving business in the 1800’s. The old factory, built in 1855, has since become a historic landmark and has been added to the National Register of Historic Places. Westfield’s motto is “Community Driven,” which you will surely notice when you run this special race. Community is the key to the elements that make up any well-directed race and in this city; community support for any endeavor is unparalleled.

Westfield is home to Westfield State College, founded in 1838 on the principles of innovative thinking and social responsibility in an effort to build leaders within the community. There are also numerous state parks and conservation areas, such as Stanley Park, Hampton Ponds State Park, Hawks Nest and Victoria Estates conservation areas. This makes for beautiful site-seeing that will never be compromised by modern-day construction. There are also exciting museums in Westfield, such as Amelia Park Children’s Museum on Broad Street near the ice arena and public garden, and The Edwin Smith Historical Museum and Jasper Rand Art Museum, both located on Elm Street.

Westfield is also part of the string of cities and towns that make up the Metacomet-Monadnock Trail, a trail famous to hikers and trail runners alike. The trail is 114 miles long and extends from Massachusetts into New Hampshire. The trail is geologically unique in that it includes everything from waterfalls to exposed summits and cliff faces, to lakes, farmlands, swamplands, diverse forests of trees, and many historic sites. It is maintained by the Berkshire chapter of the Appalachian Mountain Club and an amazing trail system fully appreciated by the towns and cities along this trail!

Pubs in Town – Live Irish!
There are numerous Irish pubs in Westfield that will serve you Whisky or Guinness, some green concoction, or possibly even some boiled cabbage! For starters visit the extensive beer collection at Paddy Irish Pub located on quaint Elm Street, or head up the street to Shenanigan’s, also on Elm, for a pint. Whip City Brew has gotten rave reviews by locals and is known for their extensive beer selection. For a more upscale drinking and dining experience, head to The Tavern Restaurant.

For breakfast and homemade maple syrup, visit the Pomeroy Sugar House! This gem is a treasure within Westfield and has been part of the Pomeroy family for three generations. They produce their own maple syrup by harvesting sap from nearby Rock Maple trees, so the syrup has a distinct flavor. You can’t get more ‘local’ than this! The farm and sugar house are Open for breakfast on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, 7:30AM to 1:00PM from Mid-February through the first of April.

Westfield is also home to a terrific local running shoe store called Fast Feet. Check them out here:
