The Lawrence Sons of Italy Road Race and Health Walk will be running this year with a start and finish at the Sons of Italy Lodge, 155 Marston Street, Lawrence, Massachusetts. Their community and family friendly 1K Youth Run starts at 10:30 a.m., followed by the 5K Walk at 10:45. The Road Race blasts off at 11:00 a.m. Number pickup and late registration will be at the lodge beginning at 9:00 a.m. on race day, Saturday, May 28. They offer a choice of the 5K run or walk, plus the kids can have their own competition. Yes, everyone can participate. It will be a celebration of the sport; Lawrence has a great reputation for welcoming runners. And it will also be a celebration of the USA armed forces, honoring those who have served or are serving in our military branches.

New This Year: The Lawrence Sons of Italy teamed up with the Garibaldi Liguria Club in nearby Haverhill to offer the “Memorial Weekend Challenge”, with participants running the SOI 5K in Lawrence on Saturday, the 28th; and then running the Baldi Five Mile River Run on Sunday, May 29th. Participants in both will receive special prizes. And of course you get a discount by signing up for both. The Garibaldi Club is located at 86 Washington Street, Haverhill, where the Sunday five miler will start and finish. Both races will offer really good post race food and adult refreshments. “Challenge” Prizes will be in addition to the individual race awards.

Please check the Lawrence Sons of Italy Race Website to sign up for the 5K or to sign up for both races and the “Memorial Weekend Challenge”:

Awards and Records
Awards will be presented to the first three finishers overall in the 5K run—cash prizes for the top three overall—and there will be trophy prizes for the top three in the following age groups: 18 and under, 19-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69 and 70+; separate division for Veterans and Active duty military personnel. All finishers receive a custom souvenir medal.

The five-mile race records are held by Casey Moulton (25:18) of Pelham, NH and Melissa Donais (30:43) of Bradford, MA. The 5-kilometer record holders are Frank Row (18:25) of Reading, MA and Peggy Gioioso (20:49) of Methuen, MA. (These records are on the old courses—new course records will be set in the upcoming race.)
The Lawrence Sons of Italy 1K offers trophies to the top three girls and boys in each of five different age groups: 5-6, 7-8. 9-10, 11-12, and 13-14. All youth race entrants will receive a ribbon indicating their participation.

All 5K participants will be timed by Yankee Timing Company, the walk and run, and they will be posting individual race results almost immediately. The awards for the “Challenge” will be in 10-year age groups as well, and they will be awarded following the Baldi Five Mile River Run individual awards. What a great way to spend part of your Saturday and Sunday, your holiday weekend running for fun and remembering those who serve. “Challenge” yourself! Enter both races today for a reduced fee. "The event is an opportunity for us to honor the men and women of the armed forces and our veterans in a special way," said Marshall McCloskey, Race Director for the Lawrence Sons of Italy 5K. Since the SOI event once had 5K and 5-mile races, they decided they would concentrate only on the 5K Run and Walk this year and combine with the Baldi River Run for the “Challenge”, since they are on the same weekend. And many have expressed interest in running both on this three-day holiday weekend; especially since they are so close together.

Families are encouraged to bring their youngsters to participate in the 1K youth race starting at 10:30 am, one-half hour before the adult race. Registration and packet pick up for everyone will be at the race venue, the Sons of Italy Lodge, 155 Marston Street, Lawrence beginning at 9:00 a.m. on race morning.

Please visit the race Website at http://www.coolrunning.com/major/11/sonsofitaly/ for lots of information including course description, profile and maps, online registration and downloadable registration forms and fees, awards, directions, sponsors, amenities, T-shirts, records, previous results, schedule, details on post race pasta feed and celebration, and more.

Race Amenities
For the 5-kilometer race and walk T-shirts will be awarded to the first 400 to entrants. Timing will be provided by Yankee Timing Company, providing quick and accurate results for all. They will have course maps for you. The Sons of Italy will host a post-race pasta feed free to all entrants, complemented by beverages and baked goods and more refreshments provided by a variety of sponsors. All participants are eligible for an excellent raffle following the races. This will be a FUN morning!

Race Beneficiary
Proceeds from the race will benefit the Veterans Northeast Outreach Center of Haverhill, which serves the Merrimack Valley and Southern New Hampshire. The mission of the Veteran's Outreach Center is to provide services to assist, support and advocate for Veterans and their families (please see: http://www.northeastveterans.org/).

Come Run, Walk--An Event for the Entire Family
Race day festivities offer an opportunity for all family members to participate—runners, walkers, kids. The 5K Health Walk is available for those looking for a more leisurely pace. The first 400 participants will receive T-shirts. Again, the kids run the 1K at 10:30 a.m., the walk will begin at 10:45, and the 5K race blasts off at 11:00. Start your summer racing off right; start your holiday weekend off with an enjoyable and healthy activity—your 5K on Saturday in Lawrence. Then challenge yourself and run the Baldi River Five Miler on Sunday. Just be tough and run them both!
