Parades, remembrances and family gatherings are at the heart of Memorial Day Weekend, of course, and the third Annual S.H.O.R.E. Run in Scituate, Massachusetts is fast securing a place of it’s own among these start of summer traditions on the South Coast of Massachusetts. This 5K run, presented by Dunkin Donuts is on Saturday, May 28th. The race is fast, fun and all about family; and is running for a very good cause too. This USATF-sanctioned event includes a 5K (3.1 mile) race and a two-mile walk, both of which boast some of the most breathtaking views of the Atlantic and Scituate Harbor. It’s the perfect destination race for those around the region to enjoy a weekend; and for locals, it’s a great event to run or walk with your weekend holiday guests.
The 3.1-mile race course is manageable even for beginning weekend warriors, while it also attracts those who are out for speed and serious competition. There are a few small hills; however, the gorgeous view offers a welcome distraction to even the most focused runners. Of course, the Walk component of the event makes it accessible to anyone who wants to enjoy the outdoors on a holiday weekend and take in the scenery and camaraderie of this small-town event with big time appeal. It’s a great balance between amateurs or beginners, professional level experienced runners, and people who want simply participate to support Scituate High School.
Proceeds from the race are to benefit Scituate High School’s Opportunities for Resources and Education (SHORE) foundation. S.H.O.R.E was established in 1990 when budget cuts threatened the quality of education. S.H.O.R.E. brings the community together through fundraising events to better promote academic, arts, and athletic opportunities for Scituate youths.
The race starts and finishes at Scituate’s Peggotty Beach, which is nestled in a quiet seaside neighborhood. Last year almost 600 runners and just as many S.H.O.R.E. supporters came out to participate, volunteer and cheer the runners on. The sound of their cheers was second only to the sound of the surf against the coastline. The race starts and finishes from just outside the beach parking lot.
Registration opens at 8:30 a.m. The race kicks off at 10:00 a.m. This early start, and the fact that it will all be wrapped up by noon, means you can run and walk and still have the rest of your Saturday for barbecues, parades and the beach. You won’t want to miss the Free T-shirt toss at 11 a.m., which has become an event unto itself!
While most things remain the same for this well-organized race, S.H.O.R.E. is proud to announce Dunkin Donuts as the official Title sponsor this year. Now officially named “the Dunkin Donuts S.H.O.R.E. Run,” the race hopes to continue to evolve and grow as a mainstay on the spring New England Running Calendar. Other returning sponsors include: Whole Foods, REI, Baystate Physical Therapy, and Girls on the Go. S.H.O.R.E. also welcomes new sponsors Bayside Runners with Saucony and Marathon Sports to the event this year.
“We’re grateful to the south shore running community, to the Town of Scituate, Dunkin Donuts, and all our sponsors for making a continued commitment to our race,” says Michael Versace, Race Director. “In only our third year this race has already proven it has staying power and Dunkin Donuts, a community based company, is showing their support for local education and the importance of family and fitness by partnering with this event.”
Chip-based timing has been added to the run this year. Sometimes a race sets itself apart with the smallest of details. With this run they offer convenient bag storage so that runner’s can stash their gear before they run; an amenity that is usually only seen at larger races or longer distances. In addition, every registered runner will get a great T-shirt, and there will be awards for the first female and male overall, and the top two finishers in each 10-year age group, women and men. Post-race fun includes music, food, and some great raffle prizes. Growth was terrific the first two years and for 2011 the numbers show no signs of slowing as the race grows in popularity. So register early!
Most importantly, over $15,000 was presented to Scituate High School on behalf of the Dunkin Donuts S.H.O.R.E. Run in 2010. Since its inception in 1990, S.H.O.R.E. has raised almost $1,000,000 to provide Scituate students with the best opportunities available to advance their learning and transition to becoming young adults. They fund everything from cultural activities to academic and sports programs at the High School, and 100% of the proceeds from the race will directly to S.H.O.R.E. Other communities could learn much from this model.
