The third annual St. Charles Running Festival, presented by Lennar Corporation and managed by Corrigan Sports Enterprises, will take place on Saturday, April 13, 2013. This event is a unique happening in southern Maryland, comprised of a choice of two running distances for adults that are held in conjunction with the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs Fun Fest, plus the Kids' Dash. Sign up now for this wonderful racing experience and baseball-themed fun fest--the registration fees go up on March 1st so don't delay.
It’s all taking place in scenic St. Charles just a few miles off I-495 via Route 301 in Waldorf, Maryland. It is a terrific choice to add to your spring running calendar, especially for you baseball fans with young children. There are many reasons why you and friends and family will want to participate. The 10-Miler runs a scenic, mostly flat course in lovely neighborhoods with five aid stations along the way, including water, sports drinks and Power Bars--a well supported race that is sure to please. The 5K runs in the same area, just not as far from the stadium--and both have that thrilling stadium finish line with the Chronotrack B-tag system to accurately record your time.
This entire event is built around the concept of choice for the participants--guests of Corrigan Sports Enterprises and the Blue Crabs. Those completing the 10 Miler and 5K will receive a custom race premium as well as beer and refreshments (beer for those over 21 of course).
Best of all the proceeds go to charities, including, and new this year, the College of Southern Maryland. Other beneficiaries include Special Olympics and several youth athletic programs in Charles County. From packet pickup and the excellent stadium venue to the scenic courses with the finish right at the stadium, the post race entertainment and refreshments, the participation of the Blue Crabs Baseball team-– it’s all designed for your enjoyment. Not only for your running enjoyment, but you can also do good for the community simply by doing what you love.
In addition to outstanding racing, it’s a celebration of baseball. The Blue Crabs will kick off their season with their annual Fan Fest with an up-close look at beautiful Regency Furniture Stadium and some members of the team will be present. There will be a variety of inflatable rides and games, slides, bumper boats in Crabby Cove, and other play opportunities for the kids in the stadium Kids’ Zone. Plus all will have a chance to see the Blue Crabs work out and also meet and greet with players for an hour with autographs and photo opportunities—with the entire team.
If you've never been to Waldorf and the stadium, please note that this is a great location. The lovely community in historic St. Charles County offers a course filled with scenic roads that wind through rural areas and new developments.
Every detail is covered because it is organized by one of the best event organizations around, Corrigan Sports Enterprises (CSE). Last year Rebecca Scott of Ashburn, VA won the 10-mile women's race with a 1:10:27 to 1:11:38 margin over hometown (Waldorf) runner Teresa Murphy. Christopher Nowakowski of Baltimore captured the men's race in 57:10, with Jesse Stamp of Catonsville, MD a close second with 57:25. Christina Burback of Washington, D.C. took the women's 5K (19:16) just ahead of Katie Tomlinson of Hyattsville (19:39); and Ryan Newsted of nearby La Plata, MD took the men's division at 16:24.
Amenities include a collectable performance shirt (in women’s and men’s sizes), certified courses, the B-tag Chronotrack timing system, ample water and support on the course, and of course the post race fun with complimentary beer for of-age participants. Ten-mile runners will also receive a terrific race premium. The 10-mile race kicks off at 8:30 a.m., and the 5K at 8:45 a.m. just outside the stadium. The Kids' Fun Run will go at 10:00 a.m.
The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs are one of eight professional teams in the Atlantic League. Fan Fest marks the start of a new season and provides a chance for runners and their families to meet all the players, see the stadium, visit the team store, and enjoy the great atmosphere around this energetic team right after the major league season gets underway.
St. Charles County is included in the Metro Washington, D. C. area, and has about 150,000 residents. La Plata is the county seat, but Waldorf is the largest community. Founded in 1658, St. Charles County has a lot of historical structures and notable locations. It borders on several other rural Maryland counties, the Potomac River and Virginia.
