The organization and amenities are top notch for one of those "must do" spring races in New England. Yes, it’s new on the calendar, and we note yet again that LOCO Sports has created an exceptionally enjoyable race concept. They know what runners want, and how to invent creative ways to enjoy the sport of running, the type of race they themselves would enjoy running; and that seems to be the key.
This race is a gem by any standard, and is completely different than anything that came before. It is run on a beautiful single loop course beginning and ending at Sanborn Regional High School. It runs through the town of Kingston, West Kingston and the neighboring village of Danville and skirts both the Kingston State Park and the Rock Rimmon State Forest along several ponds.
You can make history by running the first ever Funky Kingston Half. The shirts and medals are sure to be keepsakes, and it’s always fun to get in on an original! But don’t delay; LOCO half marathons tend to sell out and there are limits on this field because of the town and rural nature of the course. http://kingstonhalf.com/
It is a very quiet and comfortable course with just enough elevation to keep it interesting; however, the last half mile is generally downhill to flat to the finish. The race is only half the fun, because after that finish everyone receives a custom medal, and then will enjoy Jamaican cuisine such as jerk chicken and complimenting side dishes, along with the usual post race fare such as Stonyfield products and more. Margaritaville Foods will be supplying the Jamaican cuisine, so you know it will be great.
All the while everyone will be feeling the beat of the steel drum band as they pound out those funky Caribbean tunes—a live show that will in itself be worth the short ride to Kingston. The unique tie-dye shirts will be in evidence to add to the funky theme as the post party rolls on.
And we do mean short ride for most: Kingston is easy to get to and only minutes form I-495 and NH Route 101 (east-west) and also minutes from I-95 (north-south). Sanborn Regional High School is located in Kingston at 17 Danville Road, 03848. There are directions on the race website along with a wealth of information on the course with a map, parking, support, registration, FAQ’s, contacts, post race, and much more.
One of the beneficiaries of the race will be the Sanborn High School Booster Club, which supports all scholastic athletics in the regional school district.
This event will become a classic for spring racing in New England, a regional magnet for many and a signature event for the folks at LOCO Sports. The race kicks off with an 8:00 a.m. start. Number pick up is from 6:30 to race time. The unique shirts are creating quite a stir, and the medal is sure to be a favorite.
Please see the Race Website for details on the course (with course maps), registration information, awards details, FAQ’s, directions and parking, contacts, the medical team, post race plans, and more: http://kingstonhalf.com/
Town of Kingston
Kingston is an historic small town, the fifth town to be established in New Hampshire and chartered by King William of England in 1694. The name is in honor of the king. Prior to the charter it was part of Hampton. The historic district of the town center is fascinating, and includes the historic town hall, Dr. Josiah Bartlett House (signer of the Declaration of Independence), 1686 House Restaurant, Nichols Memorial Research Library, and Kingston Historical Museum (housed in the first fire house), along with many more. Kingston State Park, which hugs Great Pond, is one of the gems in the state park system. It’s a great place to run.
