The countdown to the 17th Myrtle Beach Marathon and has begun! And from now to December 14 you can get a discounted registration fee. The weekend of events offers several race options plus the relay, a 2, 3, 4, or 5-person team event that runs in conjunction with the full Marathon. The expo runs Thursday and Friday, with the Ripley’s Aquarium Mile Family Fun Run and the 5K on Friday evening, February 14. The Marathon, Dasani Half Marathon and the Marathon Relay run on Saturday morning beginning at 6:30 so Sunday plans and travel itineraries are much easier.
This exciting event will run in famous Myrtle Beach, running along courses that will feature spectacular beach front for many miles, sights along the waterways and roadways of this delightful region; and it will highlight many notable locations where up to14 million visitors come to take part in events or simply soak up the stunning ocean-side ambiance of the region. Myrtle Beach is much more than a beach resort, having grown into a center for tourism with a lot to see and do, including cultural activities, night life and entertainment, outlet as well as boutique shopping, dining in some 1,900 restaurants, playing on 100 golf courses and enjoying over 450 hotels.
Be Ready for a Wild Time
Just as Myrtle Beach is a unique and extraordinary destination, so too is this event unique, and not only because of the ocean views. All participants will have a truly memorable time, a wild time, as they have partnered with The Institute for Greatly Endangered and Rare Species (T.I.G.E.R.S.), a sanctuary for rare animals who will be visiting venues and participants throughout the race weekend. One of the race beneficiaries is the Rare Species Fund for International Wildlife Conservation. Some areas of Myrtle Beach may take the appearance of the jungle or exotic locals. Yes, memorable.
Some of the amenities include a bag check, personalized bibs (including team name for relay), outstanding expo, 5-year age groups, pacing groups, outstanding course (including 9 miles immediately along the beach) 14 fluid stations, two food/GU stations, digital clocks at all even miles, visits by rare animals, and the famous post race party. This will sell out, so don't get left behind. Due to explosive growth in recent years they have capped each individual event: Marathon at 3,000, Dasani Half Marathon at 5,000, and the 5K at 1,500 (there is no cap on the family fun run). Myrtle Beach and Myrtle Beach.com (New Title Sponsor)
Myrtle Beach is on the coast, but has a totally different charm and appeal due to the 60 miles of the Grand Strand Beaches, and the fact that it is an island separated from the mainland by the Intracoastal Waterway. And the charming streets and lovely neighborhoods of Myrtle Beach, with long stretches of beach and dunes, provide a terrific place to run in February. For a comprehensive look at what is available for you in beautiful Myrtle Beach, check out the website for the new 2014 title sponsor of Myrtle Beach Marathon weekend, Myrtle Beach.com: http://www.myrtlebeach.com/.
And the weather will likely be perfect--on race weekend the average high temperature is about 61, and average low 37; compare that with Boston, for example, which averages 41 and 27 degrees respectively. Sunrise on Saturday morning will be at 7:01 so runners may see a terrific sunrise over the Atlantic as they begin their races (start is 6:30). And there is much more sun in South Carolina as compared with northern states; sunset will be at 5:59 p.m.
There are many cultural and historic sites, tremendous shopping, dining, and dozens of live entertainment spots. It is a great place for outdoor activities of any kind, whether running, biking, golfing, fishing or just sight-seeing.
