The course begins and ends on Portland’s scenic Back Cove, and individuals and corporate teams—runners and walkers--are welcome. The region is richer for it. Show those company colors!

For the past couple of years LOCO Sports, a race management company based in Newmarket, New Hampshire, has partnered with Harvard Pilgrim Healthcare to produce races in Massachusetts and New Hampshire. On August 16th the two organizations turn to another New England state and present the Harvard Pilgrim 5K Portland Corporate Road Race. The race will start and finish in the beautiful Back Cove section of Portland, Maine, with the start and finish at Payson Park. With a 6:15 p.m. start, the race is a perfect opportunity for runners and walkers to join with co-workers, friends and family for a Thursday evening run or walk during summer in the state's largest city, the Port City.

This will be the second time that LOCO and Harvard Pilgrim Healthcare have partnered for a Thursday night corporate race. In 2011 and 2012 the two organizations put on a corporate road race in Nashua, New Hampshire. The success of that event prompted a move into Portland with the same corporate challenge theme that encourages companies to develop employee teams for the race as well as to enhance company pride and morale.

The LOCO Sports label on a race means the event is first class all the way. The LOCO Sports website is and lists many quality races. Runners in New England have quickly come to realize that a LOCO race means a great run and great fun.

From the Smuttynose Rockfest Marathon to the Will-Run-For-Beer Series with Great Bay Half and 5K, Half at Hamptons, and the Women Only Half Marathon in Newburyport, (and more), thousands of runners from the New England running community have flocked to LOCO events. Why? LOCO Running has discovered that the formula for success on the New England running scene is one that combines well organized races with a great party atmosphere afterwards. LOCO races have become some of the biggest, most enjoyable and best races in the New England Region.

In its inaugural year the Harvard Pilgrim 5K Portland Corporate Road Race promises to continue and expand the trend that LOCO has begun. Running Thursday evening, August 16, this relatively flat loop course will start and finish at Payson Park, and will provide runners and walkers with a great experience as they run around the picturesque Back Cove section of Portland. Payson Park will provide plenty of free parking and a spacious area that will allow for a fun night before and after the race. Corporate banners and signs will be flying. Excitement is building!

With the race taking place on a Thursday night, the event will be a perfect opportunity for co-workers to have some fun after quitting time. At the Harvard Pilgrim 5K Portland Corporate Road Race the theme is going to be “the more the merrier” as far as companies and corporations are concerned. There will be team prizes for companies to compete with each other, with separate categories for small and large corporations. Some competition other than the race will include shirts, uniforms banners, and more. The company that brings the most participants to the event will also have some additional bragging rights when they receive a plaque for the largest number of participants. The Harvard Pilgrim 5K Portland Corporate Road Race also creates a great opportunity for families to have some quality time together without conflicting with weekend plans.

Of course, a large tip of the hat goes to the title sponsor, Harvard Pilgrim Health Care. Harvard Pilgrim is a full-service health benefits company serving members throughout Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Maine. Their mission is to improve the health of the people they serve and the health of society. What better way could there be to promote health than sponsor a road race, especially one that encourages co-workers and others to participate. In a very short time Harvard Pilgrim Health -- Care has become an important partner on the New England road race scene as evidenced by its sponsorship of corporate-themed events.

Two other sponsors are also important to the Harvard Pilgrim 5K Portland Corporate Road Race. Stonyfield, another company that supports healthy living, has partnered with a number of LOCO races and will be there for the Portland race. Maine Health is the race's community partner.

Let's not forget that the race is taking place in one of New England's premier summer spots, Portland, Maine, a destination for many things including great restaurants and pubs. A summer evening in Portland, with the Old Port section of the city just a few blocks away, allows companies, families, and other teams of runners and walkers to make a whole evening of the event.

So, what do you say? On August 16th when the clock winds down to the end of the work day, don't head home. Tap your co-worker on the shoulder and say, “come on let's get out to Payson Park in Portland, Maine. It's time to go racing.”
