This event is a must, an ideal late spring race, whether you live in the Chicago area or want to experience one of our iconic cities as a destination. With terrific organization by US Road Sports and Entertainment Group, many amenities, live music, great lakeside views and 13.1 miles, mostly in the beautiful parks along the shore, this is a great opportunity to run and experience Chicago as never before.
Run this race along the shore of Lake Michigan. The 13.1 Marathon Chicago is one of eight race events in the national series. It began in Los Angeles in January, followed by Miami in early March and New York in late March. Each event includes a 5K in addition to the 13.1 Marathon. After Chicago the series continues in Boston (September 15), with both Atlanta (October 6) and Dallas (October 26) in the fall; and it finally returns to Florida with 13.1 Marathon Fort Lauderdale on November 10. These are not HALF of anything; they are eight terrific events that have drawn praise and awe from throughout the running community.
You will love this race, and you may want to do them all. But for starters don’t miss this exciting gem, an experience you will totally enjoy for the course, the locale, the amenities, and for just plain rockin’ fun! Packet pick up will be conveniently located at 1620 North Wells Street, Chicago, IL 60614—Thursday, June 6 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m., and Friday, June 7, from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. All half marathon finishers will receive a medal. The courses are USATF-certified, and the 13.1 has 11 aid stations with nearby porto-johns at each. There will be live musical entertainment along the course and a fantastic finish line festival. The series is known for their very special post race parties. This is World Class, my friends! Check out the event at www.131chicago.com. And for questions you can e-mail email@example.com.
Chicago is known as the Windy City, of course, but in truth it is rarely windy in early June and the weather is nearly ideal for racing. Chicago is also known as the “Jewell of the Lakes” and “Gem of the Prairie”. More recently the term “America’s Third Coast” has come into use.
Windy City Challenge
But let’s stay with Windy City—and here comes the Windy City Challenge: Run the Allstate Life Insurance Chicago 13.1 Marathon® on June 8, and exactly three months later run the 17th annual Chicago Half Marathon, September 8, Chicago’s “Home Town Race”, and receive a third commemorative medal for the 26.2 “Marathon” Windy City Challenge—three custom keepsake medals for two races. Of course, to do them both you must do the first.
That’s right, two great races - three terrific medals! Experience two of Chicago's best races. Runners who register for both races will automatically be registered for the Windy City Challenge! Exclusive Windy City Challenge benefits include not only a special finisher’s medal but also a private Windy City Challenge pick-up line at the Chicago Half Marathon Expo. The 17th Running of the Chicago Half Marathon & 5K takes place on Sunday, September 8, 2013. The Chicago Half Marathon & 5K sells out at 20,000 participants.
The Chicago Half is among the five largest half marathons in the U.S. and in the top 20 largest road races in the country. It gives participants the chance to run on Lake Shore Drive! This scenic 13.1-mile course will start and finish in Jackson Park and showcase the south lakefront and the Jackson Park Golf Course. The Lake Shore Drive stretch offers beautiful views of the great Chicago Skyline.
The Allstate Life InsuranceSM 13.1 Marathon® start and finish are at the South Shore Cultural Center, 7059 South Shore Drive, Chicago 60649. It is adjacent to Rainbow Park and South Shore Golf Club near East 71st Street. The 13.1 starts at 7:00 a.m. and the Karhu 5K kicks off at 7:45 a.m. A beautiful lakeside course, it parallels Lake Shore Drive over much of the race, and includes loops in both Jackson Park (site of the 1893 Columbian Exposition, Worlds Fair) and Burnham Park. It runs between East and West Lagoons in Jackson Park and adjacent to Columbia Basin and the famous Museum of Science and Industry.
The course includes portions of Dearborn Drive and runs northbound first with a turnaround near the Stephen A. Douglas tomb and Memorial. This is one race that will leave you with a feeling of enjoyment and accomplishment, as well as tremendously enjoyable fun, during and after the event. There is great support and live entertainment (party stations), and there will be digital clocks at every mile. And you will enjoy the great food! And Beer! Yes, they have a fully stocked post-race party planned with live music and awards ceremony, with good food—great pizza--and beer that will keep you pumped and joyous long after you cross the finish line, whether 13.1 miles or the 5K. It is rewarding—in many ways, the “premier beer and pizza race”. www.131chicago.com. Remember, there is NO race day registration.
Not only is this a great place to race, but you will want to leave time to savor the atmosphere and beauty of this unbelievably dynamic, culturally and artistically rich city. Plan to spend the weekend exploring the amazing gems of Chicago’s heritage: The aforementioned Museum of Culture and Industry, Adler Planetarium, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Field Museum, John G. Shed Aquarium, beautiful and expansive Lincoln Park (great place to run, as are all the lakeshore parks), Millennium and Grant Parks, and the Navy Pier just to name a few.
It is a great running and walking city, whether in “the Loop” or beyond. Shopping and nightlife are top notch as well, with unlimited choices in music and performing arts.
If you like baseball you are in luck. The Chicago Cubs will be playing a three-game series at Wrigley Field the weekend of June 7-8-9, and the Chicago White Sox will be entertaining the Oakland Athletics for a four-game set at U.S. Cellular field (very close to race venues).
A Must Experience—Let’s Do It
Come and run this race, enjoy the party, and leave with exciting memories. You will be entertained and rewarded. The magnificence of the city and of the location is enduring. The race is well planned and organized by true professionals; it’s really special, innovative, and enjoyable. They are well prepared for you!
