Racing in Miami in February anyone? As cold descends upon much of the country, the appeal of distance running in comfort and sunshine becomes incrementally more appealing. And where better than Miami and Miami Beach where so much is happening and the weather is generally ideal.
Yes, the countdown to the 12th Annual Miami Marathon and Half Marathon has begun! The races are very flat, inviting you for a personal record. The courses are absolutely stunning with start and finish adjacent to the American Airlines Arena and Bicentennial Park on Biscayne Boulevard. Participants and spectators have great views of the city from both sides of Biscayne Bay, as they run causeways across the bay in both directions. Running in Miami Beach includes the lovely pastels of the Art Deco district, and ocean views along many miles of beaches.
There is no place like Miami, and the marathon course explores much of it. The expo runs Friday and Saturday, and the Marathon and Half Marathon run on Sunday morning, February 2, 2014, beginning at 6:15 a.m.
As with all US Road Sports events, they have designed a very cool, custom, commemorative medal—very cool indeed and one-of-a-kind. Add some bling from the Florida Storm Series (see below), and you will have some conversation pieces like no other finisher’s awards. Get your bling!
Averages on February 2 show a high of 74, low of 62 and a mean of 68—ideal for running. The sun rises at 7:04 on that date, so runners will experience the amazing sunrise which will be a treat in itself. Sunset is 6:05 p.m., well after darkness has fallen across the northern tier of the country.
There is a wealth of information on the Race Website to guide participants on everything associated with the event and the area: Registration, travel and accommodations, training plans and groups, getting to the venue, charities, sponsorship, the Expo and number pick-up, spectator information, volunteer opportunities, photos, results, merchandise, courses and so much more. http://www.usroadsports.com/Signature/Miami/
The Nissan Health and Fitness Expo will be open on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. It is open to the public and worth a visit. Runners can also pick up packets and bibs during this time. Awards for all races run three deep in 14 different age group categories for women and men. Celebrate your triumphant finish with friends new and old before heading off to enjoy all that Miami and Miami Beach have to offer.
Miami and Miami Beach
Miami is unique and enjoys many advantages over other cities. It is the defacto capital of the Americas and as such is a center for international business and commerce, with an international, multiethnic vibe. And there is so much to see and do, including world-class cultural activities—art, music, and performing arts of all sorts—elegant as well as practical shopping, dining with a variety of cuisines from around the world, and a legendary nightlife scene. Historic architecture mixes with the ultra modern; the water and beaches are fantastic, and the weather is ideal nearly all the time.
Speaking of the American Airlines Arena, the NBA Champion Miami Heat will be in New York on Saturday, February 1, but will return for a Monday night tilt against Detroit the evening after the Marathon.
It is impossible to list even a small portion of what is available to do in Miami before and after your race, but a few examples: The Biscayne National Park, Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden, the Holocaust Museum in Miami Beach, the Art Deco District, Miami Seaquarium, Gold Coast Railroad Museum, Miami-Dade Cultural Center, and run or bike through Coconut Grove or on miles of trails on Key Biscayne. See the Everglades. Pick a beach. Take a cruise. Enjoy performances and take in a show.
The Five-Event Florida Storm Series
This race is also very significant as part of a series, the Florida Storm Series established by US Road Sports. The series includes the National Allstate Life InsuranceSM Fort Lauderdale13.1 Marathon® November 10; The Palm Beaches Marathon and Run Fest (full and half marathon), December 8, 2013; the ING Miami Marathon (also full and half marathon) on February 2, 2014; the National Allstate Life InsuranceSM Miami 13.1 Marathon® on March 2nd; and the First Watch Sarasota Half Marathon and Half Marathon Relay on March 16, 2014. If you want impressive bling this series is for you! The more events you run the bigger the medal. Run three of the five and get a great medal; run four of five and get a better, bigger medal; run all five and get a ridiculous "Level Five" award, a medal you can use for weight training. See details on the race website about the individual race: http://www.usroadsports.com/Signature/Miami/, as well as the series: http://www.flstormseries.com/.
