Each year, the Athleta Iron Girl series of events grows and evolves. And 2011 is no different—what a lineup! With 13 great events for women only—ranging from road races to duathlons to triathlons—these races have something for every aspiring woman athlete. Are you ready to take it to the next level? Are you ready to experience that unique camaraderie? This year’s series includes longer distances to challenge you and two new triathlons in New Orleans and Portland to entice you.

Empowerment, challenge, growth, grace all are within your grasp. The Iron Girl series of events gives every woman a platform to push herself through the next challenge and past her limits. Launched in 2004, theses races aim to empower women toward a healthy lifestyle while united in athleticism, strength and grace, all embodied in Iron Girl.
New for 2011, Iron Girl has teamed up with Athleta, the Sonoma County-based women’s sports and active apparel brand. As the new title sponsor, Athleta and Iron Girl make a powerful team—both focused on giving women a chance to come together through sport to do something great for themselves alongside friends, family and other female athletes. “A desire to be challenged athletically while bonding with and supporting others embodies the Athleta woman, making Iron Girl an ideal partner,” said Tess Roering, VP of Marketing for Athleta.

Iron-Clad Amenities
All Athleta Iron Girl event participants are treated to a memorable event experience that will live beyond the finish line. In addition to racing in a friendly but competitive all-female setting, the takeaways are also first-class. Each athlete will be treated to a post-race breakfast, women-specific performance tees, professional timing, personalized race bibs, custom finisher’s medals for each event, TriClique jewelry for age group winners, on-demand results, music requests for the Clearwater Half Marathon, post-race giveaways and so much more. And if that’s not enough cool stuff, check out the online shop for some Iron Girl merchandise:

Ready, Set… Grow!
Athleta Iron Girl races are filling up fast, so be sure to sign up early. Chances are there’s an Athleta Iron Girl event in a city near you. Are you up for the challenge? Mark your calendars for these exciting dates:

Clearwater, Florida was just the Beginning
The Athleta Iron Girl series kicked off in Clearwater, Florida on April 10th with the new Iron Girl Clearwater Half-Marathon and 5K Run/Walk. The half marathon features a single-loop course that starts and finishes at Clearwater Beach--lovely. The 5K run/walk was an out-and-back course from Clearwater Beach. Soak up the sun and enjoy the waterfront views on both courses. Leave the headphones at home with many of these events—you won’t need them on this course, which features entertainment zones with DJs pumping out motivational music to keep you going to the finish line. Have a favorite tune that psyches you up during your run? There will be a request line for songs you want to hear on the course. And you even have a say in which tune will be rocking the start.

The Clearwater event, which featured a 15K (9.3 miles) in 2010, challenged participants by extending the run to 13.1 miles. Each year, Iron Girl veterans can adjust their goals and train for a longer distance. And Iron Girls in the making can start with the 5K and look to build from event-to-event or year-to-year.

Las Vegas, Nevada
Viva Las Vegas! If you’re looking to participate in just one triathlon this year, place your bets on the 4th annual Athleta Iron Girl Las Vegas Women’s Triathlon. This sprint-distance race includes an 800-meter swim in Lake Las Vegas, 30K bike ride, and 5K run. The race starts and finishes at the spectacular, privately owned Loews Lake Las Vegas Resort. It’s no wonder why the March 2010 issue of Triathlete magazine listed this race as one of the top five women’s only events.

Atlanta, Georgia—May 15th
The 5th annual Athleta Iron Girl Lake Lanier Islands sprint triathlon includes a 1/3 mile swim, 18-mile bike ride and 3-mile run on the grounds of the Lake Lanier Island Resort Beach and Waterpark. This year’s event is already sold out—be sure to put it on your list for next year!

New Orleans, Louisiana—May 30th
Iron Girl hits the Big Easy! This is so exciting! New in 2011 is the inaugural Athleta Iron Girl New Orleans triathlon. This sprint-distance race includes a ¼ mile-swim in Lake Pontchartrain, 12-mile bike ride along Lakeshore Drive and 5K out-and-back run. This race is certain to be a fast one—with pancake flat bike and run courses through historic New Orleans. Mark your calendars for this can’t miss inaugural event!

Portland, Oregon—June 26th
Swim in Henry Hagg Lake, bike through town and run through the waterfront park at the inaugural Athleta Iron Girl Portland triathlon, which takes place just 25 miles southwest of downtown Portland. Often referred to as one of America’s greenest cities, Portland is rich in parks and green space. Its cultural urban center also offers a fantastic nightlife with a variety of restaurants, microbreweries, night clubs, museums and performing arts centers and local artists. This USA Triathlon-sanctioned event includes the Aqua Sphere wetsuit-legal 600-meter swim, the Trek 22K bike ride and a 5K run along Henry Hagg Lake. The swim will feature a wave start based by age group. Awards will be given to the top three finishers in each five-year age group—from age 14 to 80+ years. Plan for a long weekend of triathlon and sightseeing in Oregon’s City of Roses!

Racine, Wisconsin—July 31st
The 2nd annual Iron Girl Racine triathlon (400-meter swim, 22K bike, 5K run) heads back to the shores of beautiful Lake Michigan. Racine is a quiet, relaxing getaway that’s just a short drive from hectic Chicago and Milwaukee. A 400-meter swim in the usually calm waters of Lake Michigan, a 22K bike over rolling countryside and a fast and flat 5K run makes this a fantastic event. And once the race is over, check some of the city’s historic landmarks, including Frank Lloyd Wright’s famous Thomas P. Hardy House, which is situated on a bluff overlooking the lake, as well as his streamlined Johnson Wax Administration Building.

Syracuse, New York—August 7th
The 3rd annual Athleta Iron Girl Syracuse Women’s Triathlon has it all—a 600-meter swim in pristine Oneida Lake, a 30K bike ride through Brewerton and a 5K run through Oneida Shores Park. Located just 12 miles outside downtown Syracuse, this event is easy to get to and beautiful to race. It’s already sold out for 2011; check back next year to get in on the action.

Columbia, Maryland—August 21st
Always a sellout, the Athleta Iron Girl Columbia triathlon is already full. Keep an eye out at the end of this season and sign up for next year’s 0.62-mile swim, 17.5-mile bike ride and 3.5-mile run in Columbia, Md. This one has sold out every year.

Boulder, Colorado—August 27th
The 2nd annual Athleta Iron Girl Boulder Women’s Triathlon takes place within the Boulder Reservoir, a 700-acre multi-use recreation area, and features a ¼ mile swim, 17.2-mile bike and 3.1-mile run. With the Denver airport just 25 miles away, getting to the race couldn’t be easier. Shadowed by the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, Boulder is a year-round outdoor recreation lover’s dream. Boulder is known for its world-class rock climbing, hiking and mountain biking. But if you want to unwind after the race, Boulder also offers a great downtown atmosphere with a slew of eclectic local restaurants and pubs, shopping at Pearl Street Mall and a hot local music scene. Boulder truly has something for everyone.

Seattle, Washington—September 11th
its lucky number seven for the Athleta Iron Girl Seattle event featuring both 10K and 5K run/walk distances. See where it all started; join one of the original Iron Girl events. Commune with nature as you challenge yourself by running through Seattle’s Green Lake Park’s pedestrian- and bike-friendly paved paths.

Lake Tahoe, California—September 18th
Now in its second year, the Athleta Iron Girl Lake Tahoe South Shore Women’s triathlon may be one of the few events where you swim in one state and run and bike in another! The race starts with an 800-meter wetsuit-legal swim in the crystal-clear waters of Lake Tahoe and then transitions to a 24K bike and 5K run through Nevada’s rolling hills. Challenge yourself in Tahoe this fall and then test your luck at nearby casinos, or reward yourself at one of the many area spas. You may have never done an event quite like this before, but you’ll be sure to do it again and again.

Bloomington, Minnesota--September 25th
Are you looking for a way to give your legs a great workout? Check out the 7th annual Athleta Iron Girl Bloomington Women’s Duathlon. This 2-mile run, 22-mile bike ride and 2-mile run, which takes participants through Normandale Lake Park, is the largest duathlon in the country. Sign up now as this race is sure to fill up fast and sells out early!

Del Mar, California—November 6th
Rounding out the 2011 season is the 5th annual Athleta Iron Girl 10K and 5K run/walk at the sunny and warm Del Mar Fairgrounds in San Diego County. The out-and-back courses start at the fairgrounds and head up onto the Pacific Coast Highway, giving all racers access to some breath-taking ocean views. Iron Girl 10K runners get a head start on the fun with a 7:30 a.m. go time; 5K runners start 20 minutes later. The early start means you’ll be done in time to reward yourself for your efforts by checking out some nearby beaches, local shops and restaurants or just walking around this upscale seaside community.
