The countdown to the 38th Annual Space Coast Marathon in Cocoa Village, Florida has begun! The Running Zone and the Space Coast Runners welcome you to the only space- themed marathon in the country. This unique event will blast off on Sunday, November 29th, on beautiful USATF-certified waterfront courses along Florida’s famed east coast. And with the Kennedy Space Center serving as a dramatic backdrop for the race, it is no wonder that the Space Coast Marathon receives high praise from throughout the country.
There aren’t many earthlings who will be able to resist the absolutely delightful space- themed activities, including a best space costume contest and plenty of photo opportunities. In keeping with the space theme, all finishers will receive space certificates and astronaut medals.
In addition, every participant is eligible for the grand prize drawing of four passes to “Dine with an Astronaut” and a “NASA Up Close Tour” at the Kennedy Space Center Visitors Complex. One of the most popular programs at the Kennedy Space Center, “Lunch with an Astronaut” gives visitors a thank-your-lucky-stars kind of experience where visitors enjoy a delicious meal, meet a and chat with a veteran member of NASA’s Astronaut Corps, and perhaps get an autograph.
Get set to blast off at 6:00 a.m. on Sunday morning for the 38th running of the Space Coast Marathon in Cocoa Village; both races start at the same time and location. Beginning with a spectacular sunrise, you will be in for a rare treat as you enjoy this beautiful waterfront course along the Indian River and the Intracoastal Waterway. Scenic and serene, it is a runner’s paradise. But wait, there is more! You can count on the exceptional race organization to make this an unforgettable, fun-filled experience. As you might imagine the sky is the limit when it comes to a race of this magnitude and longevity.
You will start your race to the roar of a space shuttle countdown and liftoff on the Jumbotron. There is nothing like it to get your boosters powered. And to keep you energized along the way, there will be ample aid stations offering water and sports drinks along with gels starting at mile 8. You will be over the moon with delight at the space props along the course, including volunteers dressed in NASA-like outfits.
Set a PR with this year’s Pace Teams! Pace groups are available, led by experienced pacers for a wide variety of times, including Boston Marathon qualifying standards. These groups can provide useful support as you strive to achieve your marathon goals.
Post Race Celebration and De-briefing
Celebrate your triumphant finish with a delicious, complimentary pancake, egg and sausage breakfast and/or pizza following the race. All finishers will also receive a large beach towel with the race logo, space certificates and uniquely designed medals which are sure to be treasured. Costume contest winners will receive cash prizes.
Awards will be given to the top three women and men overall and top three finishers in each of the five-year age groups starting with 15, the minimum age for participation in the marathon. Jeff Galloway--Something Extra
Just to add to the excitement, the Space Coast Marathon has announced that Jeff Galloway, Olympian, author, coach and running industry entrepreneur will be the keynote speaker at the pre-race pasta dinner. The dinner will be from 5:30 to 7:30 on Saturday, November 28 at the Radisson Resort at the Port, the race host hotel. Galloway will also be involved with race day activities, including awards presentations. He enjoys chatting with race participants.
Galloway has an impressive list of credits as an author, coach, member of the 1972 Olympic team, retailer, and motivational speaker. He will conduct a three-hour “Running School” in conjunction with the Health and Fitness Expo on Saturday. A first rate, two day Health and Fitness Expo sponsored by Health First Health Plans, makes this a stellar marathon event. This year it will be held on Friday, November 27th from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Saturday, November 28th from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Maxwell C. King Center for the Performing Arts. It will feature more than twenty exhibitors showcasing the newest designs in running shoes and gear as well as the latest developments in training, fitness and nutrition.
