With your help, we can turn crossing the finish line into more than a personal victory; we can make it into a triumph over cancer.

Did you know the same qualities that make you an athlete could also make you a hero? Perseverance, bravery, willpower, drive, resolution, grit, courage, conviction, and most of all, hope. These are some of the qualities that push us runners through long miles, the hurt, and tough times. These qualities are also what can drive humans to achieve the remarkable: help those who are suffering, and perhaps help save a life.

One of the DetermiNation Team members said it best, "I feel that being part of the DetermiNation program is something I should have done a long time ago; to feel better about myself as a survivor and getting the support from others who are also part of the DetermiNation program." - Lauren Johnson, DetermiNation Participant, Westport, CT

If you have the fearlessness to run 26.2 or even 13.1 miles, you have the determination to take it one step further and start raising much-needed funds for the American Cancer Society. By doing so, you will join others in the quest to foster cancer prevention, research, innovative treatments, and work with lawmakers on funding and creating a healthier world to live in.

You will help alleviate suffering and save lives. Plus, the money you pledge for the ING Hartford Marathon ACS DetermiNation Team will fund services nationally, across New England and, most importantly, in the home state of Connecticut. You will indeed become someone’s hero. You might even help someone you know. For more information on how to become a DetermiNation Team runner in the ING Hartford Marathon please visit www.acsdetermination.org/inghartford

Every day, approximately 1,500 people die from cancer in the United States, and 1,596,670 new cases of cancer have been projected for the year 2011; and about 571,950 Americans are expected to die of cancer this year alone*. Most of you have personally been affected by cancer; you've either heard the unfortunate news as it is shared to you by a doctor, or a loved one or friend has been diagnosed where you then become a caregiver. The sad truth is that people we love and care for have died from cancer. But with the help of generous volunteers and donors, many have also triumphed… and they continue to celebrate life.

By joining the DetermiNation Team you will be changing the statistics of cancer. From 1990 to 2005 the American Cancer Society contributed to a 15 percent decrease in the overall cancer death rate. That means 650,000 cancer deaths were avoided and more survivors can celebrate birthdays. You can be a part of these amazing numbers! Joining the team is simple: just sign up online and begin working with the DetermiNation Team immediately. There are information sessions, training tips and outlines on fundraising that make it easy and manageable to accomplish your goals.

DetermiNation Member Benefits
This is the third year as an official race charity for the ING Hartford Marathon, so the DetermiNation Team really knows their stuff! By joining the Team you will be a VIP at the race. The Society's event day staff is well organized, enthusiastic, and well equipped to help you succeed in the race. Friday evening join the team for a wonderful pre-race pasta dinner on October 14th! On race day, you will have access to coupons from the Society's official store partner, Fleet Feet Sports.

There will be a race tent at the start and finish line in Bushnell Park for your exclusive gear check, yoga warm-ups and post-race massages. During the race there will be cheer teams posted along the course giving you individual attention and the extra push you need. As a member of the DetermiNation program, you are also eligible for other exclusive benefits including:

• Free group training, mentor support from professional team coaches, and moral support from other team members.
• Free online tools to make achieving your fundraising goals easy and fun.
• Exclusive American Cancer Society DetermiNation program racing shirt from Brooks
• Recognition for fundraising success and your hard work!
• The opportunity to dedicate your efforts in honor of, or in memory of, someone affected by cancer and receive ribbons to wear in support of them.

Hartford’s ING Marathon
The race begins Saturday, October 15th at 8:00am. The ING Hartford Marathon is a fast, flat and environmentally friendly event that promises to deliver a fantastic weekend for all athletes. This is a national class event with local appeal, and it has something to offer all levels of participants with the full marathon, half marathon, team relays, 5K, and Kid’s K run. In its 18th year, the Hartford Marathon Foundation race directors run a tight ship and have things down to a science. Expect this weekend of racing events to run smoothly; all you have to do is show up, run and enjoy the scenery and the experience!

Green Race = Healthy Planet, Healthy People
This is one of the greenest races in the country. The Hartford Marathon Foundation race committee, which has been given high marks from Running USA, Road Race Management, and the Council for Responsible Sport, goes out of its way to ensure their event is green and locally focused. They have proven that road racing - particularly long-distance events - can be environmentally friendly and socially responsible.

The ING Hartford Marathon does away with plastic cups and bottles, and instead uses a water bubbler that was designed and built by engineers at United Technologies and powered by Vital Water. Since its first use at the race, the bubbler has saved more than 20,000 plastic bottles from entering the local landfill. This race also supplies runners with reusable drawstring canvas goodie bags that take the place of plastic race bags; they employ a paper-free registration process, provide technical race t-shirts that are made of 100% sustainable bamboo materials, and give out a commemorative refillable water bottle so runners can rehydrate without leaving anything behind.

Healthy Expo
Their free two-day Healthy Lifestyles Expo will be held on Thursday, October 13th and Friday, October 14th from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. both days. This is where you will pick up your race number and sustainable goodie bag. It is also the place to be for the latest on sports and fitness products, health screenings, running shoes, exercise equipment, nutritional products and free samples.

Whether you are looking to qualify for Boston or running your first race, the ING Hartford Marathon will be a terrific racing experience. And with four races to choose from, plus a Kid’s Run, there’s truly something for the entire family and team. Experience the excitement of a city marathon with the beauty and quiet nature of the country as you run along the Connecticut River, past historic homes, under beautiful fall foliage, and across the beautiful floral finish line of one of the greenest races in the country. Sign up now with the Team at www.acsdetermination.org/inghartford

Join Other Heroes
When you join the American Cancer Society DetermiNation endurance program, you join a nationwide community of athletes and get the best localized support, training, and fundraising tools to help you achieve your athletic and fundraising goals. And on race day you will have the extra motivation you need knowing you are helping those whose lives have been affected by cancer. What a wonderful opportunity to do what you do – run – while dedicating your experience to the fight against cancer. By joining the DetermiNation team you are committing to help in the fight against all kinds of cancers. The money you raise will help save lives and your participation will help people get and stay well, help find cures, and help fight back!

Make Every Step Count, Even After the Finish Line
For some, the finish line is just the beginning. Cancer is widespread in the US, and is the second highest cause of death behind heart disease. There is a lot of work to do. But you can help change the statistics of cancer! By fundraising, donating, and joining the team, you can help the American Cancer Society win in this race against cancer. Here is your opportunity to be a real life hero to others.

If you are an injured runner, a shorter distance type, or a non-runner, but would still like to participate in the American Cancer Society’s DetermiNation cause, you can still raise funds and/or volunteer on race day. http://main.acsevents.org/site/TR/DetermiNation/DNFY11NE?sid=16396&type=fr_informational&pg=informational&fr_id=35210

You can also donate in other ways, either with a one-time donation, or by getting a sponsor such as the company you work for. Ask everyone you know to donate what they can too!

Prevention as a Way to Move Forward
One way to prevent cancer is to watch your weight and exercise regularly. Runners are already doing something right. Some cancer survivors have turned to running as their health improves, and look toward a future of taking care of their bodies. Running has all kinds of benefits: stress relief, a great cardio workout, helps in staving off unwanted pounds; and it also has a meditative quality. I know plenty of runners who have missed chunks of miles on a long run, and are surprised at how far along they are.

As an athlete, not only do you set an example to others of how “do-able” it is to run (I consider each run a practice run, I am always learning something new), but now you can be a hero to others, and set an example of philanthropy through athletics. Just like every step you take in a race matters because it get’s you one step closer to your finish line, so too every dollar counts in the race against cancer.

Please consider the possibility of changing the course of someone’s life by signing up today to be part of the American Cancer Society’s DetermiNation Team. It will be a life-changing gesture, not only for those afflicted with this terrible disease, but you will feel so good about yourself for doing it! You will be a hero to thousands of people who suffer from the many forms of cancer, part of a supportive and encouraging team. Join the DetermiNation Team today!
